1971 CROYDON GUARDIAN HEADQUARTERS
A dream job, really, Sarah Jane thought, moving her last box into the office, dropping it on the table with a thump. Her own desk, her own door. Her own telephone. It sat proudly on her desk with her blotter, lamp, and name plate. She had plans to clutter it all up with research soon enough.
Her garb is not that of someone who drove a desk. Certainly, she had an excellent gray suit with a matching hat that was cutting edge currant, but right now she was wearing her bright yellow waterproofs and a knit cap over her dark hair. She had plans to go out soon, oh yes she did.
It was impossible not to try the light, not to try the phone, and she toyed with each in turn.

Sitting on her desk, Sarah Jane was listening to the glorious dial tone that was herald to her new station. Then there was another, odd, wheezing, groaning sound. She frowned at the phone and hung it up, but the sound continued, and got louder. It seemed to be coming from one side of the room. Yes! And there was something there, big, blue, ghostlike and fluctuating in and out, but growing more solid with each wave.
Then it was THERE. Really there, solid and square. A Police Call Box.
Sarah Jane had pressed herself up against the opposite wall, mouth agape and eyes wide. She couldn't have been more surprised when a man popped out and called her name. Though he sounded friendly, she felt her knees turn to mush and she slid down the wall to land with a bump on her rump on the floor.
It was shocking to think that one was awake, only to find that one was dreaming. She hoped she really had this job, and it to was not a dream.
"H H Hello?" She said, faintly, almost automatically.

she was slumped against the wall opposite him and the TARDIS clearly startled but by what? It looked like she had seen a ghost, he wondered what was wrong, had some one hurt her? was she sick? The obvious still hadn't crossed his mind. "are you alright Sarah Jane?" he walked over to her, extending his hand to help her.

Sarah Jane had never been more speechless in all her 21 years of life.
If he hadn't seemed like such a nice man, she might have kicked him a good one when he came over. She'd never had such a fright in her life as when that big blue box wheezed it's way into the room out of pure nothing.
Really, she was going to kick him, but there was something about the way he said her name; the absolute kind concern on his face. And there was his unmistakable joy to see her.
He knew her name. She took his hand and let him pull her to her feet. Her mouth was open in shock. She could only get out two astounded fractions of words.
"Aa ?" She said, pointing at it, stepping forward past the man, reaching for the Police Call Box.
"Wha . . .? She continued, eyes as round as her mouth.
Then she let out a soft, short explosion of delighted laughter as her hand found wood. Just painted wood. Just a Police Call Box that wasn't there a moment ago, and now was. She spun to face the man. She had touched his hand already, but had not quite accepted him as real. Somehow it had been easier to accept the box first. Now the man? She would try, for there he stood.
"Aw, Who . . . . ?" Is the best she can do to inquire who the hell this was.

What was wrong with her? perhaps he had arrived later than he intended to, wait, no, that's it she merely hadn't seen this incarnation before. why didn't he realize it earlier, it was quite obvious, it should of hit him, the moment he saw her. "Sarah Jane, it's me, The Doctor, of course I've regenerated a few times since we last saw each other."

There was no comprehension in her eyes. She blinked three times as if to make the man, the Doctor, come clearer into focus. Reality stayed fuzzy, no matter how clear her vision. There was only one explanation.
"Is this some sort of stunt? Are you a magician? I'll put you in the paper, but I would appreciate you not being so bold as to a pull a stunt like this right in my office. And you may call me "Ms.Smith." She tried to sound righteous, but it came out breathless instead.
My what an odd dresser he was.

He stared at her, extremely puzzled, what was wrong wit her, her memory shouldn't be this bad, after all she looked so good, young even; WAIT, younger than she had looked when he first met her... How could he make such a big mistake?! He had arrived to earlier! Great!; he hated when he had to deal with paradoxes. what was he going to do?! Wait, magician, that should throw her off, He just Hoped Nothing big Happened that would mess with his plan to fool her.
"Um, that's it I'm a magician; John Smith sorry for the scare Ms. Smith."

Her face went through a variety of emotions when he said this. touching on each emotion from pure vexation to amused acceptance, and landing there to stay. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly, forgiving him for startling her, and for being so bold to pull this stunt right in her office. He was pretty good, she had to admit. That got her brain juices going and she looked at him in his dapper little hat and tie with speculation.
"I tell you what, Doctor," it was an odd name for a Magician, but she'd heard worse, "Not only will I forgive you for showing up uninvited, I'll write a little piece on you . . . . . if you will help me with something. I bet you're good at distraction. That is your job isn't it?"

He relaxed at the fact that she bought his story: what could she need his help with? what had he gotten him self into now? All he wanted was a nice chat and perhaps a cup or 2 of tea with an old friend, but as always it wouldn't be that easy. oh well what ever she needed; he would be glad to help.
"How can I help Miss Smith?"

One could see the wheels turning in her head. Planning. Plotting. "Doctor, you and I are going on a tour of a water treatment plant. We'll be tagging in after some lovely folks on a tour from a cruise ship. However, we'll be investigating some parts of the plant that are not on the tour. You're going to help me, no us, disappear."
She realized she was about to include a virtual stranger into her clandestine activities, and even invite him into her car. There was just something about him though. Something in the kindness of his eyes as he looked at her, his curiosity as his clear gaze took in the room. "It's a 20 minute drive. My car is out back." She said, invitation in her eyes as she picked up her pack and took a step toward the door.

Good old Sarah Jane he thought. always investigating something wasn't she? A water treatment center, sounded calm enough, but then he realized how was he supposed to make sure they weren't seen? he might have to use the TARDIS, but he would try to make sure it didn't come to that.
"Actually, Miss Smith I'm not very good at disappearing acts."

She would be the last one to ignore a story that dropped into her lap as the Doctor had. It really had been a good trick. Shaking off the preposterous idea of taking this man, this virtual stranger, on one of her clandestine fact-finding missions.
Better to seize the moment. "You know, I can't think of a better introductory article than one about my adventures the first day in my office. How about you and I just go around the block for a bit of tea, and you can tell me how you pulled your trick, and why, Doctor?"

He was relieved, this way he wouldn't have to risk exposing the secret of the TARDIS to her; he also wouldn't mind a cup of tea. although he probably miss out on some excitement, it didn't seem to bother him that much, considering he just finished with one of his future incarnations.
"Alright Miss Smith, it would be my pleasure"

Smiling at the Doctor and his kind, hound dog eyes, she offered an elbow and started for the door. She peeled off her knit cap and tossed it into the corner, still giving the Police Call Box a sideways glance. How exactly had he done that? She was certain it was going to be a good story.
As she reached the coat rack, she thought she might remove her waterproof jacket and trade for a sweater, but then she saw what he carried. I fine long umbrella with bright red handle. A handle shaped like a bold question mark. He was such an unexpected fellow, not more than four centimeters taller than herself, and with quite the dapper hat on.
"Oh! Is it raining out there?" she asked, giving his umbrella a little tap of her finger. Perhaps she should just leave her slicker on.
