He froze, he hated when people asked him about that, he never knew how to answer, well there was one bright side to those kind of question: it gave the opportunity to do some quick thinking; one of his favorite activities. perhaps he could claim it was raining when he began to set up his "trick", yes that would probably work.
"It was when i began to set up this trick, it took me a couple of hours, so I am not sure what the current state of the weather is Miss Smith."

"Well then," She laughed a little, "I like to live dangerously." She swung out of her bright yellow slicker and pulled on a big, thick, dark blue fisherman sweater that had been knit to fit her very-not-fisherman frame. She tugged her swath of long dark hair out of the collar, and lead the way out of her office.
"So tell me, Doctor, why me? You seem to know who I am, so you weren't just stalking the office for just any new writer."

He smiled "I'm a distant cousin of your father, bless his soul; he used to love my tricks, and thought you would as well. You probably you and me only met a few times before he passed... the times i did see you with him he was so proud" he wipes a false tear from his eye. "Anyways i was in England when i remembered your aunt telling me about your job here so decided to pay you a visit, so asked the boys down stairs where your office was and here we are."

When she hears this she begins skipping backwards just ahead of him, astonished.
"You knew my parents? We're related! That's wonderful." She is grinning ear to ear, as she comes around beside him and takes his arm to guide him into the little corner tea shop. It is rustic and warm inside, smelling of fresh roasting coffee and baking cookies. The Doctor was small enough in stature that she could easily lead him, and rather enjoyed doing so. Not that she need wrestle him, the man followed her lead like a polite dancer.
"Tell me the funniest thing you ever heard my father say, can you? Will you please Doctor?"

He feigns a painful frown "I'm sorry Sarah my dear, It's been such a long time since he and your mother, bless her heart, passed, and I've been a victim of a car accident; while it not do much physically, it has rambled some of my memory" He holds his head"so I can't seem to remember much, but there is one thing i remember is one night at Him, my self and a couple of chaps went down to the local pub, it was my birthday you see, so your father orders a light beer, the only reason he even showed up was for me he didn't like pubs that much, he takes the drink and splashes some in his face and says; Hey Drinks are on me!, it was quite the night." The little man told her this as they waited in the short line to order. For a moment, she could feel her heart sinking, and sinking far after that moment's excitement. She'd been ready with a dozen other questions the moment the Doctor had mentioned knowing her parents. It seemed, though, that the treasure trove of stories she was hoping for turned out to be a single golden coin of a moment's remembrance.
It was enough. Sarah Jane felt a smile breaking wide on her face, and tears pricking at her eyes, imagining the father she could not remember being so deliciously silly. Boldly silly. Yes, Sarah knew she had that sort of silliness in her too. I must get that from my father, she thought to herself, heart seeming to swell with that sudden pride. She gave the Doctor's elbow a squeeze of gratitude.
"Thank you. Thank you for remembering that."
It was then that they were interrupted to order tea and cakes at the counter. With a little grin, she realized this would be her first 'business meeting' she could use as a deduction, and she quietly paid for them both.
"Shall we sit inside, or outside, Doctor?" She asked with a saucy smile, for she could see out the windows it was beginning to rain.

He smiled "You're welcome, i'm sorry i couldn't remember more, there is one thing i will never forget about him though, that he loved you with every bit of love that was in his heart." he looked around "I would to prefer to sit inside if that is alright with you my dear, but i will sit outside if you wish."

How could words so tear and soothe a heart all at once? She wondered to herself.
"I want to sit under the oak tree." She said, pointing to a tiny white table sitting forlorn out in the growing rain. "Your umbrella is big enough for two cousin, and I can let the rain do my crying for me." She said, smiling none the less.
The little white bag of their pastries she slipped into one of her big slicker pockets. The cups of tea she took one in each hand, ready to let the Doctor handle the doors and his mighty umbrella.
"Please, Doctor?"

He opens the door and motions for her to exit. "After you, Sarah Jane." once she has he opens his trusty umbrella and stands beside her, holding the umbrella above their heads. "So what did you think of my little trick?, by the initial look on your face it had you quite startled; i hope it did not scare you to much, for that is the opposite of what i meant to achieve; a pleasant family reunion.

She burst out laughing at that hard enough she had to be careful not to spill the tea.
"Doctor, you startled me witless."
Some remaining nervousness left her with that laugh. She was also reassured by the absolutely impeccable way he drew his umbrella. He was a gentleman to the core, that was easy to see. Putting both teacups on the table, side by side, she took a minute to move one chair closer to the other in front of them. It didn't matter that the chair she claimed was wet, she still had her weatherproof pants on. She wondered if her sudden companion would make a fuss about it.
"You're very, very good. How old were you when you first realized magic was a skill. and not . . .not Magic like a genie rubbed out of a lantern?"
She brushed a tear off each cheek and told herself the rain was crying for her. She'd cried enough today. Why had her parents left her by the side of the road in her pram? It seemed she would never know. So she just let it go.

"Dear Sarah, who's do say i ever realized that? if i were to think like that what would be the purpose of my "magic" ? Money? I'm strictly non-profit; well at least i am when i'm doing my tricks.; but i digress i still do believe that on morning i could be washing my tea kettle and a genie might pop out; if no one believed in true magic where would humans sense of discovery and will to seek out the mysteries of the world be?" when he finishes speaking he takes a sip of his tea. he pulls out a brown paper bag and extends it toward her "Would you care for a Jelly Baby?"

One moment he was startling so badly her tongue tied, the next he had her crying, and the next laughing, like now. What an unsettling man this Doctor was. Now he had her questioning reality a little. Her laughter dwindled off, and she was left nodding, thinking, agreeing with him.
"Would you care for a Jelly Baby?" He said, with the soft rustle of a brown paper bag proffered to her.
So clearly in her mind, she could hear her aunt telling her never to take candy from strangers. With a grin, she popped her fingers into the bag, and plucked out a Jelly Baby. Green. She viciously bit off it's head, then tossed in the rest after it. Yum.
She chewed and grinned at him, the candy fruit taste making her think of childhood summers.
"Do you have a special Magician's name? Doctor Daring? The Impeccable Doctor? How does it read on your ticket, cousin?" She is smiling at him, half teasing, but still wanting answers for her article. Non Profit Magic. There was something beautiful about that idea, and it put her at ease.

Stupid Doctor! he thought; he had just realized he had said "where would HUMANS" instead of where would "where would WE" he hope she wouldn't detect his mistake, better to change the subject than find out. "it's just The Doctor actually, more mysterious that way, don't you think?" He reached and took a red Jelly Baby from the bag. "But enough about me; how have you been Sarah Jane?" He agains extends the bag of Jelly Babies towards her.

Time travel is a funny thing. In one sense, Sarah Jane had not yet traveled through time. In a sense, she also already had, certainly doubling back on her own time line more than once as her future self. Usually, there is no effect of such a thing, but this moment, a second Jelly Baby melting sweet and gooey in her mouth, she is struck by how really lovely little confections are. Lovely enough that she stares off into space, perhaps as if she is trying to remember something she forgot. It only lasts for one long breath before she gives herself a little shake and smiles at the Doctor, one of her eyebrows indicating quite clearly that she finds her own reaction slightly unusual.
"You know, those Jelly Babies are really quite tasty." Perhaps she had noticed the Doctor said 'humans', but just out of her teens, she can still be easily distracted by candy. Her age also makes her susceptible to questions about herself.
"I've got a little flat with some girls just up the way a bit. It's tiny, but there is a dishwasher." Sarah Jane had a lousy poker face and new it. She dropped her eyes so he couldn't see her moment's pain, swallowed it, then looked up at him again, grinning a bit wryly.
"I don't think Aunt Lavina minded seeing me go. I've been quite a handful. She says my heart is like Mother's, but my mind is like Father's. I guess you know about the job. Other than that, I'm saving up for a Vespa." Now her face breaks into a sunny smile "It's bright apple green and has a fine tote on the back. I'm going to get a bright red apple helmet and be apples all over." That was her latest fashion idea, perfect with a white dress in spring.
This next also excites her, bringing color to her cheeks and she is a touch shy again.
"I'm met a nice young man. We're going bowling next week." Super grin. "First Date."
She can't help it, her dark eyes, expressive with her heavy dark lashes, flicker to the bag of candy.

He frowns; she was single when he met her all those years ago, this meant that the relationship with guy didn't work out, why would some one turn down a wonderful girl like Sarah? who ever did was not worth her time. "How do you know this boy?" he asks.
