Laughing a bit, she bumped her arm against his.
"Don't look at me like that. I hardly know him. His name is Sushant, and he runs a banger cart out in the park there on a sunny day." An expressive little shrug moves through her shoulders.
"He's very nice, and he has family in Napal. He visits there. It sounds very exciting. I guess, I guess I like to dream about traveling. It's one of the reasons I want to be a reporter. The travel." She sipped her tea and looked out at the roll of green grass there in the square of the town. Familiar little town all around. In her mind's eye though, she was imagining the wonders of the world.
"I won't be traveling much working for this paper, but . . . .someday . . . . ." Her face absolutely dreamy at the thought.

"I'm glad", he says laughing "how did you meet this young lad?"
He smiles as soon as she mentions "travel" very soon she will meet his third incarnation and have the time of her life. "something tells me you'll be traveling far and wide very soon," he says with a sip of his tea. "so how are you enjoying your new job?" He grabs a Yellow Jelly Baby and pops it into his mouth.

"You know Doctor, at first all I wanted to do was use my mind to help people. Then when I started this job, or when I started writing anyhow, I discovered what I was doing was spending my time investigating the greedy and the cruel.
I almost quit. But the more I investigated, the more that I wrote, the more I realized that in the heart of every conflict, every time injustice rises, there is someone there bravely struggling against it, from the whistle blowers to the protesters. Those are the stories I want to tell! Stories about the brave people who stand in opposition of injustice, hoping to make a change, or at least to make enough noise that someone hears their cry for help. I don't want to write about the garment Mogul who runs a sweat shop, I want to write about the woman organizing to unionize!
I want to write stories about people taking risks to make the world a better place. I want to write about Heroes!"
She thumps her hand down on the table for emphasis, rocking her teacup enough to spill a quarter of it's contents into it's saucer and onto the already wet table. It is then that she realized she was standing up, having risen at some point in her impassioned speech.

As she stood up, he chuckled to himself, she was so full of life and spirit, he sipped his tea. When she finished her speech he clapped, "That is a noble idea and I suggest you pursue it;, for there are to few who stand up for the people who cannot stand up for themselves."
"So, what is going to be your first big story, hm?"

"Thank you Doctor." She said most seriously, though with a happy, sheepish grin. Quite demurely she sat down, poured the tea in her saucer out on to the grass, then sat it down and took a long drink from her cooling tea.
"Two local children have come down with some sort of illness that leaves them to waste away, lethargic in their beds for three days. Both were found unconscious out on the grounds. I think the government is being hush hush about it. Oh, they say that it was something the children ate, but I have a different idea.
You see, Doctor, those children were found half way between the Youth Center, and the Wadden Water works. I went to that Youth Center and I talked to those kids. They have all kinds of stories about sounds and lights they see coming out of that big brick building that houses the reciprocating steam engine. Those kids told me that the two children found unconscious had gone over to the building on a dare, disappeared for almost twenty minutes. They missed the bell in, and when the Counselor's came looking, found them there laid out in the grass.
I'm going to the Waterworks to get a better look at that old steam powered machine, and try to jimmy myself a way to come back later on my own in the night. I know there is a story in there, Doctor, I just know it!"
((One of my favorite parts of this video is in the first shot. a little corgi, mid screen left.))

"Interesting, Do you believe that the government is involved?" he asks sipping his tea. "I believe you mentioned, this earlier, did you not?, oh that's right, you wanted my help, well i may not be good at disappearing acts but i am VERY good at misdirection."
He extends his arm out to his side and makes it seems that he is going to do a trick, he then spits out five uncracked eggs on to the table. "Ta Da!" he says laughing.

It is a little disgusting, and a bit shocking. It is also a stunning display of well performed magic. So stunning, that for a flabbergasted moment, she thinks 'Here. Here is a true magic man. Not someone who pretends, this man can do real magic. Just as I always hoped, magic is real!'
It is a splendid way to feel for a moment. It takes a few seconds of silent, gape mouthed goggling at the laughing Doctor before his laughter catches in her, and her laughter bubbles up to join his.
"Oh! Doctor! That was wonderful! It was terrible, but it was wonderful." No longer feeling entirely stunned, she of course knew he wasn't actually magic, but she had been about to blurt out exactly that he was. She laughed herself out with him.
When they had sobered, she gave her dark tumble hair a shake, then grinned up at him, giving him a saucy curl of brow. "Each one of us are the Government, we Doctor, we must all take responsibility for the actions of our Government.
Whether there are any high levels of Government involved in this caper, I don't know. I do know this. Whomever it is, they aren't nice people. It doesn't matter where they work, really."
She sipped the last of her tea, cooled a bit now, but perfectly, almost sweetly, diffused with the rain.

He smiles "Thank you, Sarah Jane, it that trick took me awhile to master that trick." "So when are you planning to go to this facility?" He takes his sip of his tea then pops another Jelly Baby into mouth. "And would you mind if I tagged along? My magic might come in handy along the way" He takes a deck of cards from his pocket "Allow me to show you another trick." He places the deck infront of her. "Pick a card Sarah."

"I've got my weatherproofs on because I was about to leave when you," She gave him a fierce glare, but the glint of a smile in her eye shows that she is teasing, "Made your grand entrance, Mr.Smith."
Even as she says this, she is pulling a card from the deck. She peeks at it carefully, then holds it to her chest, now grinning up at him.
"You may come with me if this is a good card trick, Doctor."

Carefully securing the question mark on his umbrella tightly between his arm and armpit, he reaches over and takes the deck, he then cuts the deck thoroughly, once he has the umbrella in his hand once more he pushes deck towards her.
"Please place your card anywhere in the deck the deck Sarah, also feel free shuffle or cut the deck as many times as you want; when you’re finished hand me the deck, and I will find your card.” He smiles as he takes a sip of tea with his free hand.
‘This was the perfect opportunity to try out his new Sonic Screwdriver, he had added a D.N.A scanner on this one, and he hoping to have a chance to use it. He had included the D.N.A of all of his previous companions.’

What a funny little man, she thought. And unexpectedly charming. Sarah Jane suddenly found herself hoping it would be a good trick. She wasn't actually afraid to go to the water treatment plant, she'd never admit to that. She was, however, becoming aware that the endless curiosity that many had teased her about for as long as she could remember, sometimes lead her to where things go bump in the night.
It just seemed that if she could get this distant cousin of hers, John Smith the magician, to come with her, it might be more fun than frightening. She added her own card to the deck most slyly, then shuffled them all quite briskly over one thigh, the table being far to wet with rain and tea.
Frrrrip! Frrrrrip! Frrrip!
For a moment she had been joking when she said she'd take him with if it was a good trick, but now she realized she really was testing him. She looked at him most challenging, her smile fierce and eyes bright, as she held out the entirely randomized deck. She intended to watch him most carefully, thinking certainly he'd never be able to find the 9 of Hearts she had hidden in the stack.

With his free hand he reaches over and takes the deck from her hand; he once again secures his umbrella between his the middle of his arm and the side of his upper body, he begins to set up the trick, but soon realizes he will need both of his arms to complete the trick.
'Blast', He thinks trying once again to set up the trick quickly reaching the previous result, 'perhaps this will be easier if I ask Sarah to hold the umbrella.'
"Would you mind holding this Sarah?" He asks extending the umbrella to her once He has placed His hand over the deck.

"Perhaps it would," She grinned, then turned mock-fierce on him, "But I'll be watching you very closely, so no funny stuff." She kept a close eye on both his hands and the deck of cards as she took the umbrella from him, their hands brushing briefly. His hands were warm and dry. A working man's hands, which she wouldn't have guessed by his gentle nature and fanciful job. Nice man's hands.
She didn't see him 'try any funny stuff', so now she was throughly intrigued as she sat there holding the umbrella over them both.
"Now what, Doctor?" she smiled at him, enjoying the quiet out here. Everyone else had the sense to get get out of the rain but them.

Now that both of His hands are free he carefully cuts the deck into four separate decks and carefully shuffles them once finished he merges them into a single deck again he then cuts the deck in half then cuts each sub deck in to two more decks then selecting one deck he places the others out of the way for the time being. He carefully places the cards from his selected deck side by side until they are all face down on the table.
"Now Sarah I will find out if your card was in this deck" He says taking his Sonic Screwdriver out of his inner pocket "This is my wand" he says moving it about seemingly randomly, how ever he is actually setting The Screwdriver to have a bigger reaction when it passes over cards that have older and more traces of Sarah's D.N.A, this way it will detect which card was the one Sarah picked. "And it will help me find your card" he says
He waves it over each row. As it passes over each card it makes a small beeping sound; however none of these cards are Sarah's.
He quickly gathers all the cards from the deck into a pile once more then selects a second deck and repeats the process with the same results, he then repeats the process once more, as he passes over the final card in the second row the Screwdriver makes a loud beeping sound. He tucks his screwdriver into his inner pocket once more, he then reaches down and picks out the card and shows it to Sarah.
"Was this the card you pick out?" He asks smiling.

He was not flashy. He was not slick. He did not sling the cards around like a Casino dealer. Neatly, gently, he shuffled them, again and again. Then the Doctor pulled out something that looked like a fancy tyre pressure gauge, and waved it about the cards. Sarah Jane is not so young that she' doesn't understand about misdirection, and she takes this moment to look up at him.
Nothing but a bit of concentration on that kind face and his hound dog eyes. He really did have an impressive set of brows. Then the tyre pressure gauge was beeping, and the Doctor was handing her a card.
9 of Hearts. Her card. She did her best to keep a straight face, though he'd surprised her. Sarah Jane always though that slight of hand magic would never work up close. Not this close, not with her and her self - honed powers of observation. Now she frowned as she closely examined the card for any sort of mark or dent he might have made on it before he'd shuffled so thoroughly. It had not been tampered with.
Saucy grin enough for a dimple to flash. "I'll tell you for another Jelly Baby." She said, only because she really wanted one. A girl must keep trim after all, and she didn't often buy herself sweets.
