The Doctor said very cheerfully, "Just admiring the flowers."
Melissa responded, "Me too.....do you have a garden of your own?"
"Yep....I'm always adding to it," the Doctor asked.
Melissa nodded. It was then that she noticed Kendra's expression. "Are you all right?" It looked to Melissa as if Kendra was almost afraid of this man. If there was some reason to be afraid of him, Melissa wanted to know. She whispered Kendra, "Do you know him?"

Kendra looked at Melissa. "No, I don't," she said, trying to keep her fear from showing. "And I'm fine, just a bit tired and a little hungry," she added. She looked at the Doctor. It seemed odd to her that he just happened to be admiring flowers right when they were planning to.

The Doctor looked at Kendra curiously, "Are you certain?"
He, too, had noticed the strange look on Kendra's face. This wouldn't be the first time that someone didn't like him. "You haven't seen anything strange around here....aliens or anything?"
The Doctor decided to see what Kendra's views on aliens were.

This caused some suspicion for Kendra. "Well, no, not that I've seen." She watched him carefully. It seemed to her that he had something to hide, which was something she didn't feel comfortable about. Perhaps he was one from either side of the mutant war.

The Doctor shrugged.
___
Melissa smiled at her friends, realizing that they probably didn't know her name yet. "My name is Melissa," she said to both of them.
____
The Doctor grinned and said, "I'm the Doctor --- just the Doctor." Melissa looked at him oddly. Had he really just asked if Kendra had seen aliens?

This threw up major red flags for Kendra. "That's an odd name to go by." Titles like that were too easily used by mutants, though she hadn't heard of a mutant called the Doctor. She wondered what that said about his power.

"It's nice to meet both of you," Melissa said. "Would you like to get something to eat?" It was about noon, and Melissa was hungry. She assumed that the Doctor and Kendra would be in the same state.
The Doctor hesitated a bit, but finally said, "Yes, that would be fine."
Although Melissa thought it was odd that he referred to himself as "the Doctor," she also thought that he was rather cute. Perhaps she could just get to know him a bit more.
The Doctor turned back to Kendra, "Well, I wasn't born with the name....I chose it."

"I suppose you'd have to have," Kendra said. She knew he had to be a mutant, most likely from the Brotherhood if he was so vain to go by his mutant name all the time. She had good reason to. She was supposed to be dead. She knew she couldn't use her mutant name in front of him.
"Yeah, I'm starved," she told Melissa.

Melissa led the way towards a restaurant with an outside patio area.
The Time Lord followed. He glanced at Kendra, somewhat surprised by her easy acceptance of his name. It almost seemed that she had some sort of theory. "So, where are you two from?"
He knew that neither of them really had a Boston accent, which meant that both of them were from somewhere else.
Melissa answered him, "Ohio."

Kendra followed Melissa. She glanced at the Doctor. "Originally? Or recently?" She still had her suspicions about him.

The Doctor shrugged, "Either..no both...."
Melissa looked at the Doctor as they stood in line for food. "And we can tell by your accent where you're from."
The Time Lord looked at her and shrugged. Of course these humans couldn't tell the difference between an English accent and a Gallifreyan accent that sounded English.
"You're from England, aren't you?" Melissa asked him.
The Doctor replied, "Well..yes and no..."

"Yes and no? How would that work?" Kendra asked. She didn't like how he acted. He had something to hide, and people could be coming after her at that moment. She didn't like this at all. And she couldn't use either name to introduce herself.

The Doctor glanced at Kendra and replied, "I'm actually from Gallifrey, but I've spent a lot of time in London -- one of my favorite places."
The Doctor replied, deciding to answer truthfully, but without giving them quite all the information.
Melissa eyed him suspiciously. So was this "Gallifrey" place not in England? But his accent...
Melissa didn't have time to say anything because it was her turn to order her food.

"Gallifrey? I've been a lot of places, Mister, and I have never heard of a Gallifrey. Where is that?" Kendra asked. She had been everywhere except Antarctica.

The Doctor glanced at Kyra sadly. "It no longer exists," he told her without looking at her. "There isn't anyone who can go there now."
Melissa started at him. "What...what happened to your city?"
He responded, "It was destroyed....in a war...." a few tears were evident on his cheeks.
