Kendra shrugged. "All kinds of books. I usually prefer science fiction, but lately it has been just for laughs." She frowned at the mention of parents. Even after four years, it was hard to think about them. "They were alright, I guess. Some said I was spoiled rotten, especially my older sister, but I had nothing to complain about." She chuckled a little at the end.

Melissa understood something that Kendra had not directly stated. Kendra's parents were dead. That much was clear to her. No one talked about their parents in the past tense unless they were dead.
"I'm so sorry..." Melissa said. "You're parents are dead, aren't they? I wouldn't have asked you about them if I had known..."
This seemed to be the more important topic to discuss at the time. It also seemed to be the one that Kendra was trying to avoid...and understandably so.

(Melissa spoke in the past tense in that question)
Kendra shrugged. "Yeah, they are, but I'm used to it now. I've been on my own for a few years now, so..." She really didn't like talking about herself. If she said too much, she knew she had to leave, that was how it always was. Friendships never last long when the truth comes out.

(Yeah...she was referring to the earlier question that she had asked about Kendra's parents...what prompted Kendra to speak in that way...)
Melissa nodded at Kendra. "If you want to talk about it to someone, I'm here...you don't have to talk if you don't want to."
"We could also talk about something else. It's up to you." Melissa watched Kendra carefully. It seemed that this girl was the type who didn't really trust anyone. "Where have you been living?" Melissa asked her.

Kendra just nodded at Melissa's offer, but didn't take it. It would have been nice to have someone to confide in, but she knew that in her situation it would be disastrous.
She was glad at the change in subject. She shrugged. "Everywhere. Anywhere. I can usually find someone to give me a place to stay. I have a few old pals that I can count on for that."

(fanfiction still has glitches...urgghh.....)
Melissa nodded, "Well, where are you staying in Boston? Maybe you could stay with me..."
It was at that point that she had found some books on gardening that happened to interest her. "Do you like gardening at all?" she asked.
Noting the girl's discomfort, she hoped that they could talk about something happier to Kendra...at least until he was ready to confide in her. The girl needed to talk, Melissa knew.

(Yeah, I know)
Kendra smiled. "Thanks, but I probably won't be here long. Kinda live on the wind, you know?"
She looked at the books Melissa was looking at and shrugged. "Not particularly."

Melissa answered Kendra, "I'm not really here long either. I'm on vacation with my family."
Melissa picked out a few books. "I was just going to ask you if you wanted to look at some of the flower gardens around here with me. But if you don't like that, we can do something else."
Melissa felt really bad for Kendra.
"And I'm ready to check out, are you?" Melissa asked as she took out her library card.

Kendra smiled at the mention of Melissa's family. "That's cool."
She watched what Melissa was picking out, then looked at her as she spoke again. "It's alright, I wouldn't mind. I've been on boats for months, it's been too long since I've seen a garden, though there was this one gal who had a terrarium collection down below."
She then nodded. "Yeah, I didn't see anything that really popped out at me, so I'm ready to go."
She saw that look in her eye and wished then that she hadn't said anything. She just wanted to get past it and move on.

Melissa put the books on the counter that she wanted to be checked out and waited for the librarian to process them. After she was done doing this she waited for Kendra by the exit doors.
Melissa smiled at the prospect at looking at the gardens in the area. She was glad that her school library card was accepted there, as she could turn the books back in through interlibrary loan.

Kendra followed Melissa, glad to have someone to hang out with again. It had been too long since she just hang out with someone. She was always watching her own back and avoiding causing the wrong kind of attention.
"So, where to next?" Kendra asked Melissa.

Melissa looked in Kendra's direction and grinned. "Follow me," she said as she headed out the door and towards a house she had seen earlier.
"I've already looked at some of the flowers around here," Melissa explained. "And there is this one house that has these flowers....so pretty.....vinca flowers. The house also has snapdragons and petunias and begonias."
She began to walk in the direction of the house that she had seen earlier, expecting that Kendra would follow.

Kendra did follow, listening as Melissa talked about the flowers. She smiled. This girl reminded her of the lady with the terrariums. She would talk all the times about the rare specimens she had. "Sounds nice," Kendra said.

It was only when Melissa had rounded the corner of the house that she saw a man kneeling by the flowers, admiring them. This man was wearing a long trench coat, and in Melissa's opinion, was rather handsome. His brown hair was sticking up in the front in several directions, and it seemed to her that he was enjoying himself.
The Doctor, now realizing that he was no longer alone, the two girls and greeted them.
"Hello,"
Melissa studied him for a moment and responded, "Hi..." she responded, somewhat nervously.

"Hello," Kendra said, trying to not seem nervous. However she was paranoid at this point. He could be a spy from the Brotherhood. Or, even worse, the X-men, with their stuck-up school and uniforms and such. But he could be an average Joe. She decided it was best not to draw too much attention to herself.
