Melissa was excited herself, but she attempted not to show it too much. After all, she needed to check with her roommates first.
"Great," she exclaimed. "I just need to call them to make sure. Could you do me a favor? My cell phone's right there in the cup holder. Could you go into my contact list and dial the first number that you see? Once you've dialed it, just give the phone over to me. I hate talking on the phone while driving, but I can manage it for a short conversation."
She glanced in his direction and smiled. "Oh, and that's called hospitality. My mom told me that back in my great-grandparents day (and even farther back than that), this sort of thing was common. Because cars weren't really around much then, it used to take longer to get somewhere. There would be people who were traveling, and sometimes they would just stop at houses to get something to eat and spend the night. Families would have several guest rooms prepared for any stranger who might show up. They'd also make sure that they had food. Certain families were known for extending hospitality more than others. It's a concept that also goes back to biblical times. I understand that it is the original definition of hospitality. It's a shame that we don't really do that anymore."
She sighed.
"It's hard to trust anyone. People don't tend to let total strangers into their houses anymore. I suppose you can't blame us....the way society has gone ."
She continued, "It's really no trouble at all. I like helping people out, and even though I don't know you very well, I trust you. The problem is going to be convincing one of my roommates -- something happened to her with a guy a while ago, and she tends not to trust men she doesn't know Doctor, I want you to stay with us."
(To clear up any confusion, when she refers to her family -- it's always going to be the family that she "knows" and the history that she "knows." (See human part of bio)
Also, she is talking in general terms here, just relating interesting information that she's heard people say about hospitality. She's not trying to explain these things to an alien...since she doesn't know that he's not human.) Reply Edit . Report Abuse . Ban User . Delete Post .«Jan 15th 2010, 8:25am . "Ah, the loving art of hospitality, oh times have changed." The Doctor said laughing to himself remember an adventure he had.
The minute she said she wanted him to stay his eyes glistened. His thoughts caught up with the time so many people had said that to him and then...they didn't stay. He picked up the phone and went to the contact list and dialed the first number, he then handed it to Melissa.
He twiddled his thumbs still thinking about the things his faithful companions had said. The ones he'd fell in love with, the ones that had fallen in love with him and the ones that were only his friends. He loved them all in different ways, but sometimes he didn't know if they loved him.
It seemed to The Doctor that the monsters and aliens and the enemies weren't his greatest fear but the fact of losing someone he loved.
At this moment in time he looked quite sad, Melissa had no idea why. Right after she said she'd wanted him to stay he got quiet and he face dropped. Maybe he got reminded of something that happened to him. Still she was determined to get him home and help him. Reply Edit . Report Abuse . Ban User . Delete Post .«Jan 15th 2010, 8:56am #16

Melissa noticed the change of expression on the Doctor's face, but she didn't have time to ask him about it just yet. First, she needed to talk to her roommates.
"Thanks," she whispered as he handed her the phone.
She held it up to her ear, waiting for her friend to answer. Finally, on the third ring, Leslie picked up.
"Hey," Leslie said into the phone.
"It's me," responded Melissa. "I have a friend here in the car with me. Would it be all right if he ate with us? Not only that, but he needs somewhere to spend the night. I was thinking he could sleep in the living room."
Leslie didn't really know what to say in response, but decided that she should ask the other roommates first. "Hold on -- let me ask everyone else."
About a minute later Leslie came back on the line.
"It's all right with everyone here. A guy, huh? Where did you pick him up at?"
"It's a long story," Melissa replied. "However, I trust him."
"Okay, we'll have some food for him."
"Thanks." And with that, both Melissa and Leslie hung up the phone.
Melissa turned to face the Doctor very briefly.
"They said it would be all right, and so you'll be staying with us."
She smiled at him. It was nice to have a guest, especially a guy. Melissa was still curious about him.
In response to his previous statement, "Ah, the loving art of hospitality, oh times have changed.
"Yes......times have changed. I often wonder what it would have been like to live back then. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to be living in the time that I am...but I still wonder what it would have been like a long time ago. I like hearing stories of the past. I suppose I have old fashioned values, but I don't care."
Melissa decided to acknowledge the change in the Doctor's mood.
"Are you all right? You look....I don't know...sad?" Reply Edit . Report Abuse . Ban User . Delete Post .«Jan 15th 2010, 9:48am #17

"Hm? Oh, I'm alright. I'm always alright." He answered putting on a false smile. He certainly didn't want to get the person who had accepted him to be worried about him. "I'm glad your friends agree with letting me stay." He said grinning again, she seemed to address that with a smile.
Responding to the comment earlier. "Living back then would probably be a little nicer, although I..." He managed to stop himself from telling her about his adventures. "I uh tried to think of all the consequences, there were a few." He was awful at lying, still it didn't seem to bother her. She gave him back the phone and he put it back in the original position.
The traffic had settled quite a bit and didn't seem to start up again. He looked out of the window at a modern day scene in front of him. He realised he had time to think about getting the TARDIS back.
"Ok, well I could always sneek into the campus again and be silent about it...but how would I do that?" He thought frowning trying to think of what he could do. "ARGH why is it so hard to think of an idea?!" He thought.
He'd always been good at thinking of ways to do things. "OHOH MAYBE I COULD SNEEK IN AT MIDNIGHT AND USE MY SONIC SCREWDRIVER TO OPEN THE GATES?" He thought slyly to himself. Then, he looked over at the driver who was still smiling. He couldn't desert her, after everything she'd done for him. She'd trusted him, she'd let him stay at her place, she'd even asked if there he was ok. He wouldn't...no...he couldn't just leave her, she was kind and he'd just look like the scum of the Earth. That's just a bit heartless.
A second later he realised he was staring at her and she'd just looked at him. He quickly looked away, she must think he was a bit weird after that.
"Maybe I should leave it till later to think of a plan." He thought to himself, so it was settled later he'd find a way of getting back.
Suddenly, the car stopped and they had a arrived at their destination. Reply Edit . Report Abuse . Ban User . Delete Post .«Jan 15th 2010, 10:18am #19

ArwenMUC As Melissa unlocked the doors to the car with the automatic lock, she looked over at him, concerned. "No one is ever always all right. I don't know what circumstances brought you here, but if you want to talk about anything, I'm a good listener." She knew that his smile was fake, but she also didn't want to pry. If he didn't want to tell her what was wrong, then she wouldn't force him. She smiled at him again. "I'm glad that my friends agreed to have you stay, too." Melissa chose not to respond to his comments regarding living in the past. She was confused by what he had said because she had meant it as just a comment...and it almost looked like he seriously was thinking about going back in time. She dismissed that thought as being ridiculous. "No one can go back in time...and besides that, we can't choose when we get to live." There was something odd about the way that he had talked about living back then. She addressed him once more out loud. "Well, we're here." (okay...well I'm thinking of having four girls live there -- Melissa and Leslie are two. You can come up with two others, if you wish ) Reply Edit . Report Abuse . Ban User . He did as she said. He smirked a little, authority that's what he liked about humans. He walked in and there was a delightful smell that filled the air. He didn't what it was but it was divine. Looking around it was very neat and clean, well kept.
The first who introduced herself walked over to him and offered him a hand. "Hi. My name's Jessica." The girl said shaking The Doctor's hand. She had shortish ginger hair and light blue eyes. She wore black jeans, a red blouse and a orange cardigan. She seemed pleased to see this new man.
"HI! I'm The Doctor." The Doctor said enthusiastically. She smiled and remarked he had a very interesting name.
"SOPHIE! HE'S HERE!" Jessica shouted and another girl appeared.
This girl was presumably Sophie. "Hey, I'm Sophie." The girl said extending a hand and The Doctor shook it promptly. She had dark brown hair and hazel eyes. She wore a green hoodie and blue trousers. She wasn't as happy to see this new man as Jessica was but she didn't seem unhappy about him.
He introduced himself. She frowned and asked "The Doctor? Doctor of what? Or is that an English name?" She obviously took in his accent but wasn't really that bright. Melissa simply rolled her eyes.
"Uh yeah it's an English name." The Doctor said with one eye brow raised. He looked over at Melissa and she shook her head in bemusement. At least was one person he didn't have to deal with, name wise. Reply Edit . Report Abuse . Ban User . Delete Post .«Jan 15th 2010, 11:59am #26

Leslie heard the door open, and voices, so she assumed that Melissa and her guest had arrived.
Leslie didn't come right away, as Katie was over. Katie was all of the girls' friends, though she had been talking to Leslie about something private.
Katie heard the voices, too, and asked Leslie, "So....I guess they're here."
Leslie nodded. The two made their appearance with the others.
They stared at the Doctor. Katie wanted to ask Melissa where she had found such a cute guy. She didn't say anything, though.
Leslie came up to the Doctor and introduced herself, "Hello. I'm Leslie."
"And I'm Katie."
Both girls attempted to shake the Doctor's hand at the same time.
Melissa was pleased to see that her friends had welcomed the Doctor so easily.
"It probably helps that he's gorgeous," she thought to herself.
Leslie commented, "I guess we better finish with the supper."
Katie moved to follow her into the kitchen in order to help, while Melissa got up.
Katie smiled back over at Melissa. "No, you stay here. He's YOUR boyfriend....."
Melissa rolled her eyes. "He's not my boyfriend....he's...." but she didn't finish her sentence because it was obvious that Katie wasn't listening. She had already gotten into the kitchen anyway.
Melissa sighed, and then addressed the Doctor.
"You can sit anywhere you would like. You have your choice of seating."
Melissa glanced at the unoccupied chairs and couches.
The living room had two couches that faced opposite each other, one being in front of the sliding door to the patio area. There was a futon that was perpendicular to the two couches. Finally, there were two chairs, one next to each couch. A TV was directly across from the futon, viewable from all the seats. Several book shelves were located around the room. These shelves were filled with the reading tastes of the girls who lived there. Yet another shelf held a CD player and CD's. Underneath the TV was a DVD/VCR combo. Various DVD's and video tapes were on the bottom shelf of the stand. There were two end tables at the other end of the couches (the ends that didn't have the chairs next to them). The floor itself was carpeted, and was tan. Two lamps were located in the room as well. Reply Edit . Report Abuse . Ban User . Delete Post .«Jan 15th 2010, 12:16pm . Edited Jan 15th 2010, 12:18pm #27

Leslie and Katie seemed to be especially happy to see The Doctor. He didn't know why, he didn't seem so important (that fact he can't realise his own gorgeousness is implied lol).
Melissa had let him choose where to sit, he was thrilled by that but then again he was easily pleased. He looked around and chose a particularly comfortable looking chair. He smiled up at Melissa, he was right the chair was extremely comfortable.
A new smell emerged from the kitchen. He inhaled deeply and closed his eyes, it smelt so good. He opened his eyes again and beamed. He sat back, Melissa took a seat next to him. As long as she had time she could talk to him.
"Your friends are nice." He commented looking at her. "So, how long have you been friends with them all?" He asked, he didn't know if to expect a long answer or not.
Jessica sat down. She was interested in The Doctor, though she didn't show it that much. She usually hid her feelings a lot, she was one of those types that if anyone could read her mind she would be in trouble.
'Wow! He looks particularly gorgeous when sitting down.' She thought to herself whilst eyeing The Doctor. Far too much for The Doctor's liking, he looked at her questioningly. Jessica wasn't stupid and reverted her eyes. Reply Edit . Report Abuse . Ban User . Delete Post .«Jan 15th 2010, 12:52pm #28

ArwenMUC Melissa, aware that Jessica also found the Doctor attractive, tried to ignore the looks that she had given the Doctor. Instead, she focused on answering the Doctor's question. "Thank you. Yes, I'm fortunate to have all of them as my friends. Well...let me see here," Melissa began. "I met Leslie my first year at the seminary, and Katie and Jessica my second year, and I met Sophie last year. I'm finishing up my fourth year here. It wouldn't have taken so long if I didn't have so many problems with my internship stuff." Melissa glanced over at a picture sitting on the bookshelf the contained mostly her books. She was lost in thought, thinking about the various friends that she had had over the years. The picture that she happened to be looking at now was one of her college friends....friends that she had had in undergrad. None of them attended her seminary. "Those were good friends, too....." she thought to herself. They really were. They were the first true group of friends that she had had, though she had had real friends before that....just not in a group. Her eyes moved to a photo album lying underneath the bookshelf. In it held all the pictures of her high school friends. (I think I know what you're going for....feel free to continue this sort of line of questioning ) Reply Edit . Report Abuse . Ban User . "Oh I seeeee." The Doctor emphasized. He sat there thinking about how he would take to human education. The laughed at himself studing and taking exams.
Someone shouted from the kitchen for Melissa and Jessica to help her with the cooking and preparing. Both the girls headed off. The Doctor sat alone imagining what would be for dinner. He stood up and looked around quickly. It was a nice place, not big but not crowded.
Sophie headed off into the kitchen and then stopped. She looked at The Doctor, he just sat there occupied by his own thoughts. He felt someone staring at him, looking up he saw Sophie staring at him, he waved cheerly. She began off back to the kitchen.
He heard a lot of hustle and bustle, not bad or weird but just a lot of organisation. Then he heard someone go, "You were staring right at him." It sounded like Melissa. "You don't just stare right at a guest." He heard her say.
'Looks like I wasn't the only one who noticed that.' He thought to himself smirking. Reply Edit . Report Abuse . Ban User . Delete Post .«Jan 15th 2010, 1:49pm #30

"Oh thanks." He smiled. Walking over to the book shelf he looked at all the books there. He saw a particularly good one and picked it out, sat down and took out black rimmed glasses.
He started reading and realised Melissa was reading over his shoulder. He looked at her from the corner of his eyes, she looked at him, smiled and continued reading. He continued reading too.
Jessica went and sat down, looking at them she smiled from the corner of her mouth. 'Hm, they make a nice couple.' She thought to herself still slightly smiling. She picked out one of her favourite books and started reading. Reply Edit . Report Abuse . Ban User . Delete Post .«Jan 15th 2010, 2:35pm #32
