She was already pulling off the freeway. The Canterbury was just off this exit, with fare primitive enough to not challenge someone unfamiliar with the cuisine.
"I'm glad your hunger isn't gnawing at you. You must eat, however, and I think we can find something you can get down easily. I'm taking you to a public place where you can sit down and have a meal."
It was then that she realized they truly were being followed. She put on her break, snaking off to one side to avoid being hit, but stopped fast enough to make the SUV behind them come quite close.
"Hold on, Chandirra."
All in one move, she let go of the steering wheel with her left hand, flipping open her Detector watch with a flick of her wrist, and draping her arm over the back of the passenger seat. It went off instantly. She could not read what it said now, for she was busy reaching across to shift with her right hand and putting her car into reverse. She aimed the detector at the baffled SUV as long as she could, perhaps a full two seconds as she swung round, got back into drive, then broke free to drive with all her focus, one hand on the wheel, left hand back on the shift and racking through the gears as fast as she can.
The fine engine roared under her. The SUV was sluggish to turn around compared to her little sports car, and slow to accelerate, but she'd loose ground in the straight away.
"I was afraid of this. Do you know of anyone who might be after you?"

Chadirra looked at her as she spoke then held on for dear life when she brought the car to a sudden hault, "Wah!" She looked over at the other car, "Who are they?" She held on tighter as the car turned around.
She back at the other car behind them, "I don't think so.." She blinked panting a she looked away from behind them and losened her grip on the car seat, "Can't be Daleks.. um.. are there authorities here who might want me?" She looked at Sarah trying to look as brave as possible, "Who want to come after me? I do not think anyone saw me fall through that schism.." She looked back at the SUV trying to figure that out who.. what are they?

She was right. They were being gained on in the straight away. Sarah Jane decided the speed limit meant nothing this instant. She past it the limit and went beyond it. Her high concentration was clear on her face. Luckily it was late and there were not many other cars about at all. Perhaps there pursuers would not be so bold with a road full of witnesses, but still, Sarah Jane was glad she was putting few in danger with her road antics. She made the bold choice of getting a glance at her detector watch.
"Well, whom every they are, they're human. Chandirra, I need you to do something. I want you to push the button in the middle of the seat belt latch to free it, then reach into the back seat and get hold of the box back there. It's rectangular with the long side as long from your elbow to your wrist. Hold it in your lap and get belted back in. Can you do it?"

Avril looked at her then behind her seat and saw the box she was talking about, "Yes i can." She looked dwn at the seat belt and pushed the middle button causing her seat belt to ulatch itself. She repositioned herself to get the box. A few attempts and she got it and got herself into her seat with the box on her lap. She relatched her seat belt and held the box in place, "Got it Sarah."

"Hold on to it tight" She said, her words stressed right before she pulls her maneuver. Sarah Jane yanked on the emergency brake and spun the wheel, pulling them around in a tight 180 that left them fishtailing backward, the SUV close on their heels. The instant her car came to a stop, she reached over and turned the knob on the top of the box.
From the center of the box seemed to spring a bubble as fragile as one blown with soap on a summer afternoon. It was infinitely stronger than that, and now it was well anchored in the earth and the road. The SUV bounced off the shield, snubbing it's nose and making a terrible sound. Their car was not so much as tapped. Still, a slight shriek came out of her on impact.

Chadirra screamed when the car made a sudden 180, holding onto the box tightly. She watched wide eyed as Sarah reached over to the box and opened it "What does this thing do?" She ducked when the SUV bounced off the shield.She wined when she heard the sound it made then looked up when the shrieking sound was done. she looked at it wide eyed and panting Is life on this planet this dangerous all the time? Or is it just a one time occasion? She looked at Sarah then back at the SUV Are Earthlings this dangerous?

Now that she had such a better view of them she could see it was in face Torchwood she'd stymied. A couple of young bucks clawing their way out of air bags. They seemed unhurt. Yes. They were yelling at her now through their cracked windshield. A couple of young bucks she did not yet recognize. Jack was going to have her hide. But not tonight.
"Torchwood, I should have guessed."
Sarah Jane reached over and twisted the shield down and it sank back to nothing inside the box.
She flipped another 180 and was on her way.
"Nice work. Are you alright, Chandirra?"

Chadirra looked at the damaged SUV, and watched the people in the car, panting, "Haha you did all the work." She smiled. "I am okay.. Who is "Torchwood"?" She asked as she looked from the SUV to Sarah Jane then looked down at the box So this was a shield? Where did she get this from? Surely since this planet is not old enough to have flying cars they surely should not have shields yet... unless I am not the first alien to come here.

"Chadirra, please, do call me Sarah Jane, it's my name." She said, almost automatically when the girl called her Sarah. Only the Doctor called her Sarah.
"Ahh- " She let out an exasperated sigh, both because she was annoyed with Torchwood, and because their operation was difficult to explain, especially to someone without many Earth references on tap.
"Torchwood is a welcoming comity like I am, only different. When they get frightened, it's difficult for them to think, so they carry cold weapons to make things work out how they want. I just try to . . . . .think things through. It's less dangerous with less weapons around. I just like to talk about things until they work out for everyone. Torchwood overreacts and people get hurt." She has been driving along smoothly at a good clip, her peripheral vision picking up Chandirra looking ever so curiously at the Bubble Shield device.
"Honey, don't unbelt, but carefully put that box back in the back seat will you?" Her eyes were back on the road. She as speeding, but just a bit. " I'd rather not have it accidentally switched on while we are driving. It could be dangerous."
This is where Sarah Jane usually started plotting on how to reunite someone lost with someone they wish to find, but Chandirra came to her under terrible circomstance. When the girl was settled again, she carefully asked her.
"Chandirra, is it possible that you're not the only survivor of your kind? Could there be more out there? Another colony on some other planet? Another traveler like yourself?"

Chadirra looked at her, "Of course Sarah Jane." she looked at the vehicle, "Like they over react?" She looked at the box then behind her seat and set the bx on the seat behind her. Others of my kind? Did any get off the planet? "I do not even know if any others have survived. We rarely travel off world to colonize other planets, if they do they ar usually those that are exiled for wrong doings." She sighed, "We stay with our families we are born in for life, everyone from Grandparents and down." She looked at Sarah Jane, "If any are of world it is because they are too hostile to be around others." She looked down is that why that schism was there? Because I did something wrong? She looked out the window.

"Oh, now, Chadirra, I overreact all the time. You should see the fuss I put up when my son tries to leave the house without a jacket. The trouble is, when they over react they are holding guns. Kiddo, if they'd found you first, they would have stunned you, put you in the back of the SUV, and you would have woken up in a cell. It leaves a terrible impression of Earth. It's a lousy way to greet people. My way is more dangerous, but isn't it nice?"
Rain sloshed thick on the windshield in the storm, but Sarah Jane's fine little care swished it away with vigorous, brand new wipers that thumped back and forth softly and satisfactorily.
"Only the Rogues of your people are to be found out of system? Sounds like a rough crowd. We'll have to find something safer for you." She gave the girl a smile to take the sting from her words, and tapped her gently on the kneecap with her knuckles. Then she looked back out the window, face braced against the pain of the idea of this poor kid, rootless and roofless and floundering in the surf of the Universe just after she had lost everything. "I'm so sorry it's been hard for you. How did you find out what had happened to your sun, your solar system?"

"That is horrible, is it becuase this planet has been attacked in the past from other aliens?" She felt that she was asking too many questions now, "Glad you found me first and not them." She smiled when Sarah Jane leaned over, then faded with her question, "I left to explore another planet then came home. When I went back to my solar system my planet was not there just the blown up star and fragments of planets." She blinked, wishing for the memory to stop this once might as well tell her the rest, "Then that was when I went to another planet. got chased by Daleks and fell through a schism."

"I'm glad I found you first too." she said warmly, tapping Candirra's knee one more time affectionately. Of all the critters she could have found in the dark, this precocious teen was a breath of fresh air. Much better than the Squiddy Aliens any day.
"Well Torchwood is jumpy because Earth has been invaded before. I get the impression most people only know about the dangerous, ones and no one ever hears about all the nice folk who come visiting. I had a friend long ago, a very special man who taught me that whomever you meet, it will go better if you try to greet them with an open mind and some respect." A twitch of a smile tugs at the corner of her lips and she flashed it wry at Chadirra. "Except Daleks. We tried talking to them from the very beginning, and they have never heard us." Her gaze goes long at the windshield, remembering the days she went up against Davros himself. Of how she and the Doctor had struggled over whether or not they had the right to kill them off as a species in their vulnerable, infant state. She shuddered.

Chadirra squinted her eyes as she took in all that she was telling her A special man?Daleks coming here? Did he help fend them off of this planet? "Daleks will not listen to anyone but their own kind, try ordering them around and you are killed on the spot." She blinked, "We, those who stay to our ways, we never use iolence unless it is absolutely necessary, like nothing ele has worked. After the Time War our leader sent all our weapons to the system star to prove that we will no longer use violence." She looked at the rain drops on the window, "I went off world because my father told me that he felt I should leave for some reason, that something was going to happen. So I took the family ship and went to this planet that is all one giant city." She looked at Sarah Jane, "I was an only child."
