The Fourth Doctor urgently was trying to land the Tardis as quietly as possible into the room where Sarah Jane, Rani, and Davros were located. He had to stop her before she did something that would change her life as she knew it. Throwing open the doors he stepped out, knowing that if he didn't act quickly, and carefully, things could go terribly wrong.
His hearts were pounding against his chest as he observed the scene before him. He sighed with relieve when he realized that he wasn't too late, there was still time.
"Rani, will you bring me my leather gloves, and the utility knife from my bag?" Sarah Jane asked the young girl who seemed shocked about her behavior.
The Doctor walked over to Rani, gently placing his hand on her shoulder as he whispered. "I suggest you wait inside the Tardis, much safer in there. Trust me, I'm the Doctor." He gave her a light smile as to tell her that everything was going to be alright.
He watched as Rani quickly made her way into his Tardis before he worked on a way to calm one of his best friends down. The Doctor could see that she was anger at what Davros did, after all it was natural to want to protect your friends. It hurts when you know you can't undo something that's been done.
His eyes were locked onto her face, he saw the rage and pain that was building slightly from all the things Davros done. Both in the past and just recently. He didn't wish to see that in any of his friends, however some things are inevitable. The Doctor felt as if he had to help her, mainly to stop her from making this mistake.
"Sarah..." The Doctor began. He had said her name in a soft tone. Trying to get her attention away from the now unconcious Davros.
He was off to the side behind her, away from any possible strikes; even though he didn't think that she'd really try hurt him. However, sometimes it's best to be on the cautious side when someone is holding a blaster.
The Doctor spoke again, a bit louder yet his tone never faultered. "My dear Sarah Jane, what has happened to you?" He asked even though he already knew, he just had to hear her tell him herself.

There was a roaring in her ears as she stood there, braced. She wanted to kill him so bad that hot little lines of twitch kept shooting down her arms, wanting to maker her fingers pull the trigger. Davros would never know. He was out and slumped again. Do it when Rani leaves, she thought over the rhythmic roaring of what must be the slowed, agonized pulse of her heart. Then it stopped, even if she could still feel it pounding in her chest.
"Rani, will you bring me my leather gloves, and the utility knife from my bag?"
Deep down, she knew that sound, and a moment later she knew that voice. A voice she'd never thought to hear again. It was impossible, so it must be wishful thinking as she stood here now, holding life and death in her hands as the Doctor had all those years ago on Skaro.
"Sarah..."
A jolt shocked through her. That hard pressed muzzle shifted on parchment thin skin leaving a tear. That hot string from her anger to her fingers felt plucked as well. Her fingers twitched, but not enough to pull the trigger. She could not look away, for she did not trust her hands just now, and needed to stay focused. Now she'd gone over the bend for certain. His voice was so clear. Perhaps this ordeal, followed by this terrible opportunity, had led her to have this conversation with her own mind. Remembering. Knowing what he would say.
"My dear Sarah Jane, what has happened to you?" He would never condemn her, but this gentle question half keel hauled her.
"Doctor, I've been so good. I've never let go of what we learned together. Of how you showed me how to make real change, lasting change-" Her voice is no more than a warm whisper. If she tries to speak she might scream, and if she did, she might shoot. "It was enough for me to know you were out there doing the same. I've held strong, Doctor." Here her voice breaks. The muzzle wavers again as her very muscles reflect her inner conflict. Part of her wants to put this heavy stinking weapon down. Part of her wants to shoot Davros so badly her muscles are all but locked around it.
She does not believe he is there, but does not want to look and break her suspension of disbelief. It is so good to hear his voice. "Doctor, it would be so easy. . . ." She tried to explain, a thread of hope in her voice, surely he would understand. Her hands are white knuckling the large blaster.

"Doctor," He listened as she spoke, the tone in her quiet voice was the sound of remembrance. "I've been so good. I've never let go of what we learned together. Of how you showed me how to make real change, lasting change-"
She paused, trying to regain her words.
The Doctor started making his way closer to her, seeing that the intensity in the room cooled down. His bright blue eyes watched her as she continued.
"It was enough for me to know you were out there doing the same. I've held strong, Doctor."
He could hear the struggle in her voice as her hang tighten against the Sontaran blaster. The Doctor stood close to her, wanting so badly for her to put the gun down. Wanting to let her know that he was real and he was there for her. No matter what.
"Doctor, it would be so easy..."
He gently placed his hand on her right shoulder, not really wanting to hear her explination for why she wanted to do this. The Doctor leaned closed to her ear and whisper quietly. "Oh Sarah Jane, my sweet, wonderful, brillant Sarah Jane."
He smiled lightly as he reached for the blaster, gently pulling it out of her hand. He continued, no longer whispering. "I know you have, you've always stayed strong. But it's never easy, Sarah."
"You don't want to do that, I wouldn't want you to." He said softly, as he set down the blaster on the ground and slid it away from them.

If it had been anyone else in the Universe who touched her on the shoulder just then, Davros would have been a dead Kaled. But she knew the Doctor instantly. And knew she wasn't crazy either in the same fraction of a second with his breath soft against her ear. His lovely, lovely voice. His words were like cool water on the heat of her anger.
Unable to look away from her target, she can see him so close out of the corner of her eye, All teeth and curls and mighty nose. She wanted to let go of the blaster right then, but didn't really know how. His hand took it from both of hers, and she felt safe for the first time since she'd picked it up. She stands there, stunned, as he puts it down and away from them both. She could not believe she was looking at him. She couldn't how many laws of time he must twisting into into balloon animals right now.
Look. There was the worn threads on the left elbow of his coat she'd intended to sew almost 40 years ago.
He stood looming and faced her again. Sarah Jane's face is naked, for she has been disarmed in more ways than one. Mouth soft, eyes wide.
"You don't want me to?" She asked, sounding like a lost child. She climbed down off Davros transportation unit. to stand on the floor. When she looked to him again, her face had turned wise and knowing. "Are you sure?" She asked, a possibility for complex conspiracy in her eyes that had come from being on the front lines of Earth's defense. She is in black leather from collar bones to shoe soles. It suits her now in a way it never would have then.
She cannot quite bring herself to break the distance between them, any more than she can break through the moment's confusion to smile at him like her face wants to.
Surely, he would disappear, or some part of the Universe would go flying off.

"Are you sure?" She asked, as if in disbelief.
"Of course I'm sure." He answered as he pulled her in for a hug, holding her close as if the whole of reality depended on it. "I don't want you to have to kill anyone. You know me Sarah Jane."
The Doctor placed his forehead against hers, his eyes closed. "Oh my dear, dear, Sarah. I've missed you so very very much. I'm sorry I wasn't here sooner."
When he opened his eyes they showed a deep regret and pain of guilt. He truly wished that he had been there to save her, help her, every time she was in danger. Each time he didn't, he would feel another twinge of guilt rise up through his soul.
Now he was feeling some relief, relief that he had managed to help her, to save her. If only he could make it up to her for all those other times he hadn't helped.
The Doctor reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a white paper bag and offering the contents to her.
"You coming?" He asked, just like he did after his regeneration from his third self.

The way he said it, it sounded like the simplest thing in the world. And it was. Of course her friend didn't want her to kill anyone. She didn't want to kill anyone. She'd just forgotten that Davros was anyone. A moment ago he had just seemed like some horrible thing.
It was a good thing the Doctor pulled her to him, for as he reached out she was so overwhelmed her knees started to go. Then there she was, not falling. His scent and his arms surrounded her. She clung tight like a drowner, forearms hard around his back, hands into fists. Her face was pressed hard against that rough, smooth, oxblood jacket of his. She held on until the trembling stopped, and she started breathing again.
When she loosened her grip, he bent and pressed his forehead to hers. With his eyes closed, she could shamelessly drink in the welcome view of his face. She felt safe in this tiny space between them where there were no rats or bad smells, or the unconscious horror in the corner.
His apology, his sorrow, tore at her even as it healed her. It did matter that he was sorry. That this Doctor, her Doctor, was sorry. In his future, the Doctor would be a different enough man that he would not feel her pain as deep as it was. Her Doctor saw the well all the way down to the bottom, and shared it. It suddenly was not so heavy any more.
"---------I'm sorry I wasn't here sooner--" He continued, his voice softly ragged. She reached up and put a finger to his lips as he often had her. His eyes came open
"Shhhh. Doctor. I forgive you.". Her voice low in this small space, hand dropping. "And you have to know you've come every time I really need you. Every time its more than I can handle. And don't forget, don't ever forget that I do what I do by choice." Now, suddenly there is no barrier between herself and the joy she is feeling that he is here. By now she was smiling.
"Thats what you get when you teach a girl to fish, Doctor."
Then he offered her a Jelly Baby, and her grin grew wider. She reached into the bag and plucked one out. "Hm. Orange." And popped it in her mouth. As for his other invitation, she did not bother to answer with words, but simply took his hand and went aboard.

The Doctor closed the doors to his Tardis after he and Sarah Jane got aboard. Quickly running over to the console and setting it to it land on her home street.
Looking at Sarah Jane, he knew that he would someday have to leave her. The Doctor didn't know how, or even when that event would happen, and he didn't want to know. It hurt to know he, in the future, left her behind, but seeing her, saving the Earth and knowing the thing's she'd do. It made up for the difference he supposed.
When the Tardis had landed, Rani said her goodbyes and headed home to check on her family, promising to check in on Sarah Jane later.
The Doctor decided that before he left and dissapeared for awhile, that he and Sarah should go for a walk. A nice long walk in which they could just talk about things going on. Even though he knew, she knew what was going on in his at the moment.
It was pleasent during the peaceful walk, not much running, but the Doctor didn't mind. Sometimes one needs a break from all of that.
Eventually they headed back to Bannerman Road, he had to get back to the Sarah Jane of his time, who was waiting for him in the second control room, while he 'fixed' something that was supposedly 'wrong' with the console.
The Doctor hugged the Sarah from 2011 as he said goodbye. "I can't wait to see you again Sarah Jane."
He was grining that manic grin of his at her before he walked back into his Tardis. It made that familiar wheezing sound as it dissapeared into Time and Space.
He sent the Tardis into the Time Vortex and headed towards the room where his trusted companion awaited him. He walked into the second control room to tell Sarah Jane that it was safe to come out now, when he saw her on the ground sleeping. He chuckled softly before taking off his coat and laying it on her.
The Doctor was sitting by her, when she started to wake up. Noticing that she was rising he smiled widely, "Hello sleeping beauty." He couldn't help teasing her a little bit, in a friendly manner of course. Though to make up for it, and for the things that would happen in the future, he asked. "So Sarah Jane. Do you have anywhere you wanted to go? Anyplace at all, anywhere in the universe, your choice."
He was eager to take her anywhere and everywhere before the day they parted. Which he hoped wasn't anytime soon.

The weight of the Doctor's coat crumpled softly down atop her with the scent of clean wool with a hint of cinnamon and oak, waking her along with his voice. She yawned enormously and stretched, slim arms appearing from under his coat to reach toward the day. Snugging the coat around her, she sat up beside him companionably, her long dark hair a perfect disaster of sleep. "All fixed? It never did beep." She mumbled sleepily, knowing he'd fixed it, or they'd be moving faster. She had intended to take her time coming around, but then he said the magic words: "Your choice" and "Anywhere".Anywhere was one of her favorite words. Sarah often was prepared for the moment the Doctor got a wild hair and asked her to choose. Instantly, she is bright eyed awake, and grinning at him from ear to ear as they sat shoulder to shoulder. "How about I pick the what, and you pick the when?" She offered generously. The Doctor could pick a good year like he could pick a good wine. "Día de los Muertos, Cuanajo Mexico." She said, still smiling, and even biting her lip a little hoping he would like the idea as much as she.
