The London sewer was a dark, dank place. Water contaminated with God knew what dripped down into the flowing river at the bottom of the tunnel. Rats scurried along in the shadows, nibbling on whatever morsels they could find. No one would expect anyone but the sewage inspector to be in here. And that suited him just perfectly.
As his life support chair hovered along the path on the right side of the sewage river, the rats hurried away from the strange thing invading their space. Davros paid them no heed, only focusing on his destination. He soon arrived there. A manhole was above him in the ground. Davros raised his prosthetic hand and shot a spark of electric energy. There was a beep, and the secret door slid into the ground around it.
"Elevate," Davris commanded. As soon as the word left his mouth, the chair lifted up into the air and out into the daylight above. As his head rose above the surface, he took in the pathetic human countryside. He was close to the outskirts of the city of London. Snivelling humans. It was nothing like the structures that were on Skaro. Ever since the happenings on the Crucible at the Medusa Cascade, Davris had found that his hatred of humans increased. Especially a particular female...
His life support chair completely came above ground, and Davros used his controls to direct it to the ground beside his entrance. He turned off the elevation and flicked a switch. The entrance sealed itself. Davros turned his head up to his bruised and battered space capsule. Finally, after two years of being marooned on this...mudhole, his plan would be put into action. Moving over to the pod, he placed his hand on a panel outside it's hull. A door slid open and he hovered in. The control room was bathed in a dim red light, buttons and readings glowing.
Davros reached up and pressed a button. There was a 'ping', followed by beeps, each one occurring after a few seconds. The signal had begun transmission. Soon, whether it was through the phone, radio or television, Sarah Jane Smith would hear the word she dreaded; a recording of his creation's battle cry. And then she would no doubt come running.

Late Spring, 2009
Luke and Clyde had gone off to camp. Rani was busy at the Journalistic Internship she'd won in a writing contest. Sarah is deep into both her new hardcover, "The Age of Wonder: How the Romantic Generation Discovered the Beauty and Terror of Science" by Richard Holmes, and equally deep in a bag Bassett's Jelly Babies. Every once and a while, some came in the mail for her. No return address, no note. They made her happy, though they could have as easily come from Harry as anyone else.
Mr.Smith had been unusually quiet as well, as if the whole universe was taking a break. Or perhaps any invading force had decided to enjoy this balmy spring eve before starting any havoc. The dinner dishes could just wait tonight. She couldn't get out of this book.
Half an hour, 18 pages, and six Jelly Babies passed this quiet bliss with her before Mr.Smith broke in. "Sarah Jane? I am detecting a signal being broadcast from non - human technology. It is originating from Earth. From London."
She didn't even bother trying to pull her eyes to the page. The last three times Mr.Smith had announced this over the last four months, it had been those folks at Torchwood acting up and playing around with Jack's toys. "Run it through the speakers, please, Mr.Smith." she said absently.
"**EXTERMINATE**EXTERMINATE**EXTERMINATE**EXTERMINATE!!**EXTERMINATE!!**EXTERMINATE!! EXTER-"
"Turn that OFF!" she shouted, as soon as she could drag air into her lungs. It wasn't an order, it was a high, terrified plea. She hated the sound of her own fear. That horrible electronic, ripping, distorted voice had haunted her nightmares and her life for almost forty years.
Sarah Jane found she had risen to her feet, letting her book and bag fall to the floor. Her hands were clamped over her ears, and when she pulled them away they shook. She let her eyes close and all she did was breath for the next five minutes. The tremble left her. The fear had left her. Now there was only determination. Stormy sea hazel eyes opened. A few words to Mr.Smith, and out the Attic door she went.
Another ten minutes, and she had returned wearing her black leathers and her kit bag at her side. Her face is a bit wooden as she stand before Mr.Smith, reading the report, and glancing at the e-mail she'd directed Mr.Smith to send to Rani if Sarah Jane had not sent word in the next forty minutes. Another print out for the kitchen table. The last copy for herself.
The sewer it was. Wasn't it always? She grabbed the Jelly Babies and put them in her pocket for inspiration. Then she drove away in her little green and white 1991 Nissan Figaro. She couldn't feel much of anything. That was probably a good idea. Inside, she felt solid as a rock and ready for bear, that was what was important.

As the signal continued its transmission, Davros worked at different controls in his pod. No dount Miss Smith would have heard it by now, and he would have to ensure everything was ready for her arrival. And so everything was. Control over certain devices in the capsule had been transferred to him, via the console on his life support system.
When his work was completed, the Kaled scientist went out of the capsule and placed his hand back on the outside panel. He then pressed a few buttons on his control console. The signal's origin was now coming from him. It was time...turning away from the capsule, he went back and opened the hole in the ground and hovered down it. When he landed, he shot a bolt of electricity and it closed again.
Davros went on for a short time, before he reached the space he had wanted. It was the perfect place for his plan to unfold. The sewer wall had a rectangular section cut into it here, with a door at the end. It was open; Davros had always left it open. It was where his revenge would finally take place. Flicking a switch, the few lights still working on the ceiling blinked out. The only light in the darkness came from the blue eye in his forehead.
Like a shadow, watching anything that passed him by with undivided attention, Davros waited.

The map Mr.Smith had printed for her was taped to the dash, and she glanced at it, memorizing it, as she drove. Taped next to it was the map of her destination, a 15 minute drive away. She didn't think about much but the task at hand. Two hands white knuckled on the steering wheel, and her mind imprinting lefts, rights, and dead ends as fast as she could while still navigating her way out of the city.
She went to the outskirts of London, where rubble met wilds. Where the ends of old sewers met wandering camps of the disenfranchised. Fast food containers and sleeping bags deemed unfit even for those who had very little. Only the rats would seek shelter in them now.
Sarah Jane was glad of her combat boots and leathers, and inured to such minor pests. She was after larger game. Her bag was a might to heavy this night, but she was feeling strong. No one was there but herself. A very high quality flashlight weighted her hand and showed her the way. She had it on low. Rats scurried away from her as she used her Sonic lipstick to open the old rusty gate. It squeaked loudly, but she didn't have to open it far. Once inside, she closed it and slipped the lock back into the double metal loops that secured it, lining the lock up as though to shut it, but not doing so. At a glance, it would look secured. Close enough. Beside her ran a foul river-let that disappeared down into another dank pipe.
The smell was thick, but Sarah Jane remembered the horrible smell of people being burned to ash by Daleks. By the dozens. By the hundreds. She'd smelled the battle field. This, in comparison, did no more than give her a stiff upper lip.
Was it fear or bravery that drew her down here? She was terrified by the idea of Daleks loose on Earth again and what could happen. Far more afraid than she was of her 600 meter hike through these dank sewer tunnels, Holding her wrist high, she flipped open the dish face of her scanner watch. Into the dark she went, doing her best to stay high and dry of London's run off.

The Journalism Intership had been keeping Rani busy, since she had been enjoying it so much. Rani took out her cell phone and texted Luke. Hey, how are you and Clyde enjoying camp? Bet he's been teaching you some of those 'How to be cool' rules? Lol. Rani x "Rani, who are you texting?" asked her friend Sandra. "Just Luke." Rani said with a smile to her friend. "Ooh, Luke." Sandra said teasingly. "Will you quit it please, I'm not in love with him or anything!" Rani argued. "Sureee." Sandra said sarcastically, and Rani hit her with a pillow, giggling. Later on, while everyone else was outside, Rani went and checked her phone. No reply. He was probably with Clyde, laughing about some joke Clyde had made and he had left his phone in the tent. Boys. Rani thought with a roll of her eyes, and she opened up her laptop. Rani was checking her emails, since she hadn't done that for a while, and noticed one from Mr Smith. Hand over her mouth, she opened it and began to read. Rani wondered if she should go to the attic to talk to Mr Smith, or email him back. The options flickered in Rani's mind, before she closed her laptop, slid it into her bag, and made her way back to bannerman road. After a while, she got there and went up the drive. Sarah Jane's car wasn't there. Rani got the spare key to open the door and then she put it back, closing the front door behind her. She ran up to the attic. "Mr Smith, I need you." Rani said, before noticing he was out anyway. "Oops. Anyway. I got your email. Where did Sarah Jane go?" Rani asked.

((Here is my best shot at playing Mr.Smith. I do not think it will be my forte.))
Mr. Smith woke with his usual fanfare. In his own style of self awareness, he was proud of his little exhibition.
"Hello Rani. Sarah Jane has gone down into the sewer on the outskirts of London. She has printed out a map for you in case you arrived. I do believe you should follow her. Sarah Jane has gone to track down an audio signal of Alien origin."
To be even more helpful, he would play it. The Dalek voice nearly echoed in the room. Mr.Smith was also privately proud of the quality of his speakers.
"EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!!! EXTERMINATE!!!"

As Mr Smith played his fanfare, Rani rolled her eyes. "You don't have to do the fanfare ALL the time, you know!" she told him, before listening to what he had to say.As he told her of the Alien audio, he played it, just as she had expected. Rani listened carefully to the audio. "Never heard that before. Still, if she's gone tracing it herself instead of asking you to do it for her, perhaps it's dangerous." Rani said thoughtfully. "I'm going after her." Rani added, going downstairs. "Thank you, Mr Smith!" she called. She found the map and put it in her pocket. Then she wondered how she would get to London. A bus. She went into town and caught one. As soon as she got there, Rani looked at the map and started following the road to where the sewers were. She got to the sewers and started slowly going down, dreading the thought of what she might see when she did find Sarah Jane. That is, if she found her. ((I don't suppose Rani has met the Daleks before, so she doesn't know how dangerous they are.))

A sound of grating metal sounded through the sewer. Davros jerked his head round to the source of the noise. It was a good thing that he'd put himelf near the main entrance to the sewer, though he'd expected her to climb down another manhole. No matter, this would only make it easier.
Deciding to give Sarah Jane a little incentive, Davros played the recording. The shout of "Exterminate" echoed through the sewer, and Miss Smith would be drawn to it like moths to a flame. Hand poised over a certain control, the Kaled waited for her to stumble upon him.

If I fall, there will be others.
I am the first line of defense.
The Doctor is the last. This were the thoughts that she clung to, now moving forward, the Sontarn Blaster held in both hands, her bag of goodies left behind. It took both hands to hold it. One to hold it up, the other to wrap three fingers around the trigger. They were not wrapped around that trigger now, but were in position to do so. The battle cry of the Daleks tore through her like a bitter wind, but forward she went anyway. "Kaled" her Detector watch had told her, but with the signal bouncing around rock, she wasn't sure a distinction could be made between Dalek and Kaled. Neither were who Sarah Jane would choose to meet this day. She'd had to get very close to get a reading, and now it was only 5 or six meters to turn the corner and face who had called her here. She was well aware it was a trap for her. Who else but she would run toward that battle cry? Then she saw him, and said his name accusingly. It barely phased her to find him alive. No use arguing with reality. "Davros." She aimed that blaster right at him. "Turn that thing OFF." The blaster was heavy, but it's tip did not waiver. "Sarah Jane Smith." Davros smiled crookedly at the human, pointing a large blaster at him. Oh, such a foolish girl, making it as obvious as that. "We meet again. I must say, you're increasingly becoming as annoying as the Doctor." As he said that, he pressed the control his hand had been hovering over. The air around Sarah Jane seemed to shimmer before returning to normal. "I've placed a shiled around you. So that blaster will be of no use, unless you want to shoot yourself." The insane scientist chuckled quietly to himself.
He moved his chair closer to the female. "I must admit, I thought our conversation would be more interesting than this. I was expecting you to be a bit shocked at my survival, to say the least. No matter, it will not affect my plans for you." He gave her another chilling grin.

Rani heard an electronic voice as she got deeper into the sewers. She tripped over something. Perplexed, Rani looked down to see a bag. Possibly Sarah Jane's bag. Rani went towards the voice and cautiously looked around the corner. Her first mistake, when she realised there was an alien creature there. Rani quickly got herself back round the corner, though her shoes made a slipping noise that echoed through the sewer. Rani held her breath, wondering what would happen next. Her breaths were slow and quiet, her heart beating fast. It seemed she was fine, but she didn't want to move. Suddenly, as if to spoil her hiding place, her mobile rang out, in the quite loud tune it usually did. Rani hang up the phone and closed her eyes, knowing that now they'd definetly find her.

But Kaleds don't use force fields, they don't need them. She thought. You also thought Davros was dead and you're mightily wrong on that score, are you not, Sarah Jane? Regardless, it was not a contingency she'd planned on when she'd heard Daleks screaming in her Attic.
The weapon did feel like a sudden, useless weight in her hands. She put the barrel into her pocket. The blaster was much bigger than her pocket, but she kept one hand on the grip, ready to draw it again. One never knew what might happen next. Much to her surprise, it was the sound of shoes slipping on shale, and a cell phone singing out. Rani. Rani, had come! Excellent. However, the girl had just let known her location to not only Sarah Jane, but most likely to her captor as well.
Sarah Jane reached for her own pocket, pulled out her cell phone, and managed to get a hand on it just as the other phone silenced. Her eyes are riveted on the specter before her, still astonished to see him, and rather horrified he'd gotten the upper hand so quickly. A shudder ran through her as Davros came closer, just like a nightmare. She pushed her menu button and held her phone up to her ear.
"Can't talk now. Call back later." Her voice sounded strained, even to herself. She mimed hanging up and tucked the thing back into her pocket.
"You've got me there, Davros. I was certain you were dead. How could you possibly have survived?"
Her mouth was dry, and every hair follicle on her body was standing up from the power of the force shield around her.

Davros' smile faded when he heard footsteps coming from somewhere in the sewer. A noise, obviously from some sort of Earth communication device, rang out. Keeping his eyes on Sarah Jane, she took out hers and spoke into it, before doing what Davros believed was called 'hanging up.' It must've been her device, but something felt wrong...he'd need to keep on his guard.
Stirring himself, he turned back to his prisoner as his face broke into a grin again. "That's the second time you've assumed I was dead, isn't it?" he spoke to her. "You will find out how I survived soon, Sarah Jane, but first you will come with me." With that, he turned round and moved towards the door he had kept open. "Oh, if you stay where you are, the walls of the forcefield will move closet together, compressing and electrocuting you."

A sound of exasperated offense escaped her as that field began to move. For an instant, she resisted, but she could sense the density of the electricity like putting your hand close to an old television screen left on too long.
She took a a hasty step, then fell into forced march to follow Davro's Dalek like conveyance, and his hideous bobbing head. She hated forced marches.
Thank goodness the smart ones always wanted to explain themselves before they killed you. With Rani at her back, she felt she had pretty fair odds of coming out on top in this.

Rani had relief flooding through her when Sarah Jane pretended it was her cell phone. She knew, however, that Davros would be on red alert, and so she was careful to listen without making a noise this time. As Davros spoke, about Sarah Jane thinking he was dead, Rani's eyes widened. Now it wasn't every day that Sarah Jane just assumed someone was dead. Perhaps Davros was deadly, and it would be better if Sarah Jane had thought he was dead. Nonetheless, it seemed as though he had a plan, and Rani intended to find out what it was. Though how she would do this she didn't know..she was looking soundlessly around the sewer, wondering why he would choose here to hide. What was the logic? She needed Luke's head to figure that one out. She shook the idea of logic out of her mind and thought hard. If Davros just turned around, and if there was a button Rani could press to release Sarah Jane, that would be perfect..but Rani wasn't sure if there was one...she hoped Davros didn't turn around any time soon to look her way, because she wasn't hiding behind the corner any more, but she wasn't completely uncovered. She was behind a different wall, with her head peeping out to watch them and listen more.
