"How is my assumption unwarranted? It...it hurt the female back there...and then it went after you...and then it set fire to the tree I was in."
"You misunderstand, my dear boy," the Doctor replied. "I meant that your assumption that it was remotely controlled is, at this juncture, unwarranted. It could just as easily be self-directed."
"All right then....so we're just going to follow it?"
"For the moment, yes."
"What if it sees us and tries to attack it, even if we don't try to harm it?" Tyler asked, sure that this man hadn't thought through everything thoroughly yet.
The Doctor waved a hand dismissively. "That will depend entirely upon circumstances. You must learn to think quickly and act decisively!"
"Hey!" a voice called from behind them. "Hey, wait up!"
The Doctor turned, and laughed with delight and a touch of shock. "My dear girl! I had thought we left you in the care of the local constabulary! Or are they called police right now? I can never remember. But no matter. Are you well? I had thought you gravely injured."

"Pfft, I get worse than that just bringin' my cows in to market. Ever convince a steer to board a cattle trailor when he doesn't want to? Anyways, I told the cop all I knew, which isn't much. Figgered y'all would know more about this stuff. So what -was- that anyway, some sort of thingy dreamed up by some NY ads broker to get people to buy something?" Breck took her hat off long enough to whack it against her leg to rid it of imaginary dust. It had become more of an engrained habit of hers when she was perplexed. Settling it back on her brown hair she tilted her head to study them both. "It kinda looked like you two were going somewhere in a hurry. Like to where that thing came from?"

Tyler nodded, "Yeah...a robot...but someone would have to be watching it...if that's the case. I mean someone made it, and had a purpose for it."
Tyler glanced at the Doctor as he talked about thinking quickly and acting decisively. This man looked old -- but he was still sharp. Figuring that this is how this man has made it through life so far, and that he had simply been sharing some of his wisdom with Tyler, he nodded.
"All right, I will follow your lead on that. You look like you know what you're talking about."
Trusting someone like this was not easy for Tyler, but the man had proven himself so far. He , too, heard a voice calling behind them. As Tyler looked back and slowed his pace, he noticed the woman who had been attacked. She was coming with them.
"Are you sure you're all right? Are you up to this?" Tyler asked, unsure of whether or not this female should be coming with them. "That sphere could try to attack us again."
He wouldn't dissuade her from coming, but he felt that it was his duty to point out the potential danger.
Tyler heard the female's questions and shrugged. "We don't really know what it was. That's what we're trying to find out. And yes, we're going to try to find where that sphere came from."

"Have to admit I'm curious aboutthat thing myself. Anyway it's gotta be more interesting than touring Wall Street! If it does attack what say we get ourselves a nice big tennis racket and swat it away?" She swung her right arm out in a wide arc. "Or a baseball bat? Try to knock it into that river over there. The...what's it called again? Oh right, the Hudson."

Tyler looked back at Breck and laughed -- not at her, but because he enjoyed her enthusiasm and her ideas.
"Well, maybe...except I doubt any one of us has a baseball bat, a tennis racket, or anything like that. We really don't know much about it yet, and I don't know....maybe water would damage it, but then how would we learn where it came from...or who might be controlling it? I still think it might be controlled by a remote or similar device, but he's not so sure about that," Tyler said as he nodded towards the Doctor.

"Indeed I am not," the Doctor responded. "But that is simply because I refuse to leap to unwarranted conclusions without evidence. But yes, we do indeed plan to track this orb back to its point of origin and learn more about it. If you are certain you feel up to it, you are welcome to accompany us."
"This young man is named Tyler," he said with a gesture, "and I - I am known as the Doctor. And what may your name be, my dear?"

Tyler turned to the female, curious about what would make someone want to follow after a sphere that had tried to kill her.
Tyler made a slight bow as he was introduced to the female, momentarily stopping in his pursuit of the orb. "Pleasure to meet you...." It was then that he realized that he had stopped. Not wanting to get too far behind, he ran to catch up with the Doctor again.

"Oh, I'm Breck, Breck Haines. And I'm not from around here." She increased her stride to keep up as well. "I was just taking a look around this place. My cousin kept telling me I should see New York just once. Well, just once is enough for me! Oof!"
She stumbled over some trash left over from another's lunch and savagely kicked it aside. "As far as I'm concerned this is just another big city with a lot of people and a lot of noise and a lot of trash! I was thinking about going back to my ranch when all this happened. And I -have- to know just what the heck it all is! New York may have all the conviences in the world but floating metal balls that laugh and try to kill you? I may be just a simple country gal but even -I- know that ain't normal! So I gotta find out just what the hell's what!"

(OOC: It'll probably be about another day before I post anything here. I've got a general sense of the plot, but I'm trying to work out where exactly to go from here.)

"Oh, I'm Breck, Breck Haines. And I'm not from around here."
"I had gathered that from your accent, my dear," the Doctor said with a smile.
She increased her stride to keep up as well. "I was just taking a look around this place. My cousin kept telling me I should see New York just once. Well, just once is enough for me! Oof!"
"I've always believed that travel broadens the mind," the Doctor responded absently. "And New York at it's height - before the terrorist attacks in 2001 scar the skyline and then the second Great Depression in 2037 cripples the city economy - that is something to see."
"One could consider the lethal flying orbs to be a point of interest," the Doctor said, "but hardly one that seems likely to attract the tourist trade." He paused, slowing his pace, and looked around. "Ah! I think we've arrived!"
An open manhole lay before them. A short distance to one side lay the cover, bent and scarred as if by the impact of multiple blows. The Doctor turned and looked back the way they had come. "Tyler!" he called, irritably, "Do try to keep up!" He shook his head. "Honestly," he muttered, "if I could learn to keep up with my legs, surely he could learn to keep up with his asthma..."
His voice trailed away, and he shook his head. "I don't know why I said that," he said. "Just something about that boy..."

Breck studied the manhole cover, frowning. "Whoa, that thing looks like it's been through three stampedes, two tornadoes and run through a baling tractor! I don't think simple city traffic would make it end up lookin' like that! What th' hell happened to it??"

The Doctor knelt down and, producing a magnifying glass from one pocket, examined the dents and gouges in the manhole cover. For nearly a minute there was silence, except for the sound of his shoes on pavement as he shifted position and angle.
"It appears to have been struck by a large, blunt object with protruding blades." He looked over his shoulder at Breck and smiled thinly. "I believe I might just be able to name an object or two that fits that description. Wouldn't you agree?"
He looked back at the cover. "Interestingly enough, all of the damage was inflicted on the underside of the cover." Slowly, he let his eyes slide to the yawning pit of the open manhole.

Breck knelt down beside the older man and peered down into the dark hole. "Wait, that means that lawn trimmer from hell came from down there! Huh, and I thought one only had to worry about alligators in the sewers!"
She searched about for anything to drop down into the depths and found a small rock. She dropped it down into the manhole and was rewarded by a faint 'plop'. As the sound echoed below her eyes widened. "Uh...I think...maybe I shouldn't have done that...."
