Leaving the girl, the Doctor walked hurriedly towards the burning tree. He checked the young man's pulse and breathing, and then poked and prodded for obvious breaks. Everything seemed normal, although he would probably have terrible bruises up and down his left arm.
For a second, just for a second, that brought the Doctor up short with a sense of deja vu. He shook it off. "Ridiculous."
Kneeling down, he gently slapped Tyler's cheeks. "My dear boy, it is time to wake up."

Tyler felt his cheeks being slapped. Slowly opening his eyes, he looked up at the old man he had been with before. "Oh, hello....."
To an onlooker, it should have been obvious that Tyler was in no state to recognize his circumstances for what they were. His breathing was also a bit labored, which didn't register with Tyler.
Blinking up at the older man, he asked him, "Can I help you at all?"

"You already have, my dear boy. Quite a bit."
The Doctor stood up, and brushed grass clippings and charred wood fragments from the knees of his trousers. "You gave me quite a turn there, falling from the tree like that. How do you feel? Can you stand?"
Behind them, the police officer had finished checking the girl, and was now calling something in.

Tyler nodded, "I....I think so....I think I can stand."
He slowly started to sit up, putting his weight on his arms to try to get himself to a standing position. Obviously sore, he nonetheless managed to come to a standing position.
It took him only a few more minutes for him to get his bearings. The last few minutes came flooding back into his mind. "Oh...I....I...saw a camera, but that sphere decided to shoot the tree, and I fell. Couldn't save the camera...but this toy is dangerous."

He slowly started to sit up, putting his weight on his arms to try to get himself to a standing position. Obviously sore, he nonetheless managed to come to a standing position.
"Excellent, my boy, excellent." The Doctor looked at the still-burning tree, and then poked some of the fragments with his cane. "Obviously some sort of directed-energy weapon. But why would..."
"Oh...I....I...saw a camera, but that sphere decided to shoot the tree, and I fell. Couldn't save the camera...but this toy is dangerous."
"Mmm...? Eh? What's that, m'boy?" Tyler's words had penetrated his thoughts. "A camera? Now why would there be a camera there?" He considered Tyler's words more closely. "Toy? That, my boy, was no toy. It was fully autonomous, the way it behaved. So the camera must have been there to observe its behavior..."
His words trailed away, and a slow grin began to spread across his face. Yes! This is exactly what I need to banish the spectre of depression! he thought.
Drawing himself up to his full height, he offered Tyler his hand. "I am called the Doctor, my dear boy. And may I ask your name?"

Tyler spoke yet again, his memory coming back. "Yes, it was definitely a camera -- and that sphere thing talked. It said, 'You can't have that!' and then it started the fire in the tree...."
Tyler's face scrunched up as he tried to process the Doctor's words. "Wait...if it wasn't a toy, then what was it? It had to have been controlled from somewhere....or it had to have some kind of computer chip in it...."
Tyler accepted the Doctor's hand. "Doctor what?" Tyler asked. Surely he had to have a last name or position or something. "My name is Tyler," he answered.

"A pleasure, Tyler, a pleasure." The Doctor squinted a little, peering at Tyler oddly. "I have the strangest feeling we've met before... no, no, I suppose not." He looked back into the tree line, ignoring Tyler's question about his name.
"Now," he said, half thinking aloud and half answering Tyler's questions, "it most certainly was controlled from somewhere. Possibly it was computerized, possibly not, but it was most certainly no toy. Now..." He tapped his fingers on his cane absently. Then he brightened.
"Do you feel up to a little hike, my boy?"

Tyler smiled at this old man. He seemed friendly enough, and that was reassuring. The strangest thing was that he felt as if he had met the old man before as well. However, not wanting to voice it, he simply said, "It's a pleasure to meet you as well."
"Sure....I'm up for anything....so...if it wasn't a toy...then...then....who might be controlling it?" he wondered out loud. "That would mean that someone was trying to purposely hurt people -- you and that woman...and....and me...I guess...and just people in general."
Tyler glanced at the older looking man, curious as to where he might have in mind to hike to. "Where did you want to hike?"

"That certainly seems to be the case, my boy." He gave Tyler another peculiar stare, squinting a little, like he was trying to remember something.
"Where did you want to hike?"
The Doctor gestured towards the trees. "It went that way, Tyler. So, I propose we follow it and determine where it came from."

Tyler stared in the direction that the Doctor had indicated.
"Oh...right....I didn't see it go anywhere...I saw a blast hit the tree, saw the sphere, and heard it speak, but I didn't know where it went. We could follow it...but should we get a gun or something to shoot it down or disable it with? I mean...it's a sphere that's being controlled by someone, and it meant to hurt us before. Maybe there are more cameras sometime."
Another thought struck Tyler. "Hey, I wonder if that was the first time that anyone had ever been attacked by a sphere...you know....maybe this wasn't the first time...."

"A gun?" the Doctor's voice was laced with contempt and shock. "Carry a firearm, like a common ruffian? I should think not!" He shook his head, firmly. "No. If we were to go to the effort to acquire one, then we would be tempted to use it. More importantly, we would be tempted to consider it the only solution, rather than thinking clearly and arriving at a more satisfactory resolution to the situation. No. We shall not go and 'get a gun', as you say."
"I mean...it's a sphere that's being controlled by someone, and it meant to hurt us before. Maybe there are more cameras sometime."

His distaste vanished in a smile of pure delight. "Now that! My dear boy, those are capitol ideas! As we follow the trail of our mysterious sphere, keep a weather eye out for more of those cameras - if cameras they indeed were - and, if our little hike proves inconclusive, we shall pursue the question of other attacks."
He turned, and headed for the trees.

Tyler glanced at the older man in surprise. "Yes....what point would there be in having a gun if we weren't going to use it on the sphere? But...but if you would prefer not to get a gun...what kind of defense do you know of against something that could potentially...kill us?"
He let out a sigh as he ran after the Doctor. "Well....all right...let's see...shiny glints in the trees?" Tyler began to scan the trees that they passed, looking for any sign of another camera. He also looked around for where the sphere might have gone.
"Whomever was controlling it certainly doesn't seem very nice," Tyler commented. "Perhaps it is a mental patient?"
Tyler continued to run to try to keep up with the Doctor.

The Doctor smiled. "I find that one of the best defenses against something that could kill you is to simply not be in the path of that something. We shall reconnoiter, but we shall not attempt to halt the sphere. Now without greater knowledge of what it is and what its capabilities are. For now, we simply need to learn about it."
He let out a sigh as he ran after the Doctor. "Well....all right...let's see...shiny glints in the trees?" Tyler began to scan the trees that they passed, looking for any sign of another camera. He also looked around for where the sphere might have gone.

"Perhaps," agreed the Doctor. "But, I believe you are making unwarranted assumptions about the nature of this sphere."
He looked about as he walked, with the air of a country gentleman out for a stroll.

Tyler, still trying to keep up with the Doctor, responded back. "How is my assumption unwarranted? It...it hurt the female back there...and then it went after you...and then it set fire to the tree I was in."
Tyler frowned. One thing was certain; this man was slightly strange. However, there was something about him that seemed familiar. He couldn't quite place how or why, but whatever it was caused him to continue to follow after the Time Lord.
"All right then....so we're just going to follow it? What if it sees us and tries to attack it, even if we don't try to harm it?" Tyler asked, sure that this man hadn't thought through everything thoroughly yet.
Tyler, appearing much younger than the Doctor, tried to relax, however he didn't quite pull off the country gentleman air that the Doctor was doing. "How fast would you say that the sphere travels?" Tyler asked, trying to project a possible meeting place between them and the sphere.

Breck was getting a bit impatient with the constant questioning from the police officer. After she had explained over and over again that yes she had been attacked and no she had no idea what the darned thing was or where it had disappeared to she almost felt like kicking him in the shins and stalking off. She settled for taking the card he offered in case she thought of anything else to add and walking back the way she had come.
"New York," she muttered. "Next vacation I'll spend in Vegas!" A movement caught her eye and she turned her head to see the two that had helped her in the strange unexplained attack. Perhaps they had the answers? She turned to call to the police officer but he had gone off to another call. "Great. I bet -they- know what the heck's going on!"
She hesitated for a moment then decided that if she wanted any answerrs she just had to go get them herself. "Hey!" she called out and waved. "Hey, wait up!" She broke into a fast trot to catch up.
