The Doctor gave a rueful smile. "I'm afraid I've rather made a career out of annoying the Great Houses and more than once personally tweaked the Councils' nose. On the other hand they've done their share of leading me around as well. I had thought we were even then but something's been stirred up. I have to find out just what and why even though it's going to be a rough road. Some rougher for others." He said that sadly while looking at his brother and wife. They had never experienced the wrath of the High Council and he hoped to Rassilon they never would but whatever was happening around them, it smelled of something big. Big and catastrophic
"No, there's something going on around here that beyond even the Council. It may include them, some of the members may not even think they're involved but there's something else. Something I can almost put my finger on but then it vanishes." He held out his hand as if he could indeed physically touch the problem. "If it were mere misuse of power it could be singled out and snuffed but no. This is.....more insidious than that."

"Yeh too, mate?" The Meddler grinned, clapping the Doctor on the shoulder. "Oi've been there me ownself."
He listened to the rest of the Doctor's theory. "Stroike me if'n Oi ken. Oi ain't been 'round much, past few centuries. Oi've heard - an' this is just rumor 'round the Spiral, mind yeh - that sommat went right wrong wit' the Lady President's peace mission to the Daleks. What wit' that an' the Archetryx Conference blowin' up in Gallifrey's face, 'could be that the Council's runnin' scared. Tryin' to clean up them what don't fit in their ordered little society, y'ken?"
He shrugged. then laughed. "But that's just a theory, from a man what ain't been on Gallifrey fer nigh-on four centuries now."
"Oh, but where's me manners? Here Oi am rattlin' on, an' Oi ain't even introduced m'self. Since it looks like we're all rogues together, Oi call meself the Meddler. An' how do Oi address the three of yeh?"

The Doctor almost fell forward from the clap on the shoulder but quickly recovered himself. 'Meddler, where had he heard that name before? He thought a moment then shook his head. Time enough for that later, right now what this stranger had said leapt out at him like a Roman candle. Daleks! If they were involved who could say what would happen! And the Archetryx Conference??
"Oh, I'm the Doctor, and this is my.." He was just about to say 'brother' when he quickly changed his mind. The less people could be connected to him during this time the better off they would be. It was small protection but the best he had. "My friend, Tylerelrug and his wife, Kyra. The Daleks, you say? And the conference? But that conference had been planned down to the last square, nothing was supposed to be able to go wrong." He frowned, one could always find a chink in the armor of anything if one looked hard enough. And in conferences the chink was usually from the inside.
"Looking around and asking people who are too scared to talk will get us nowhere," he finally decided. "What we need is to find the archives, what's been happening in the past few years, not months. We need....I need....to go to the Matrix!"

Tyler opened his mouth to answer the Meddler when he was cut off before he had even voiced his name. Giving his brother a particularly nasty look, Tyler stood there glaring at him. Although he didn't mind going by his birth name around his relatives and the people that he knew well, he did mind it when it came to others. He much rather would have preferred his chosen title name, the Hunter, when introducing himself. Not only had the Doctor used his real name, but he had used his FULL real name. Tyler was well aware of the fact that he was more free with his real name then was his brother, but he still had standards. But then, there were times when Tyler did introduce himself to strangers with his shortened name 'Tyler.' Perhaps it was confusing to the Doctor, but Tyler preferred to make the choice on how people should know him. Furthermore, the Doctor had just passed him off as a mere friend.
Tyler continued to glare at the Doctor throughout the conversation that the Doctor and the Meddler were having.
Finally, when there was pause in the conversation, Tyler spoke up. "Well, we're not exactly favorites on Gallifrey, and there is more than one Council member that would look on us....less than favorably."
Tyler frowned at the mention of the Council members abusing their power. There was one Council member that Tyler had been the abuse object of.
There had been a peace mission to Skaro? Or at least to the Daleks. This was new information to Tyler.
When his brother had suggested going to the Matrix, Tyler shrugged. "I guess we could do that....but wouldn't they try to hide or cover up whatever is available in the Matrix??"
Tyler had never dealt with the Matrix personally, although he certainly knew of its existence and purpose. Fascinated by the idea, he finally grinned. "Or maybe not."
He then looked over the Meddler. The Meddler....why did that name seem so familiar to Tyler?

"Oh, I'm the Doctor, and this is my.. My friend, Tylerelrug and his wife, Kyra."
The Meddler clasped Tylerelrug's hand and shook it vigorously, then bowed and kissed Kyra's hand. "A pleasure to meet yehs both," he said, "a right pleasure it is. But a word o' advice from an old renegade to a newly minted pair o' renegades - yeh need ta ditch yehr names. Yehr Time Lord names. They're woven into yehr pattern, an' the Council can use 'em to track yeh where're yeh go."
He looked back at the Doctor. "Doctor... Doctor.. No! Not the Doctor! The one what left me marooned on preindustrial Terra, and then again on an ice world in the hind end o' space?" He clasped the Doctor in a bearhug of an embrace, thumping him on the back. "It's bloody good to see yeh, mate! Bloody good! Been what, six centuries more or less?"
"Well, we're not exactly favorites on Gallifrey, and there is more than one Council member that would look on us....less than favorably," he heard Tylerelrug say.
"Yeah, yeh kinda get used ta that. Collect 'em like pongwaith's yeh will, after a while." He released the Doctor and looked back at Tylerelrug and Kyra. "So, what's yehr grifts? Tech runnin'? Causality tamperin'? Or are yeh just the kind what makes the mistake o' thinking that mebbe, just mebbe, the high-n-mighty Council ain't flawless?"
He laughed again. "But listen ta' me, ramblin' on when there's a thing happenin'!"
"The Daleks, you say? And the conference? But that conference had been planned down to the last square, nothing was supposed to be able to go wrong," the Doctor said.
"Yeah, well, it's us an' the bloody Daleks, innint? One side 'r t'other's gonna make that go all ploin-shaped. What wi' us tryin' retrocausal genocide on 'em a few centuries back, an' them a' tryin' to get their stickers on the Hand o' Omega an' put replicants on the Council, it ain't like either side's gonna trust the other."
"Looking around and asking people who are too scared to talk will get us nowhere," the Doctor finally decided. "What we need is to find the archives, what's been happening in the past few years, not months. We need....I need....to go to the Matrix!"
The Meddler nodded agreement. "Not what Oi came here fer, but Oi'm game."

(Rats, the Doctor should have also used a made-up name rather than Tyler's real one too. >_< I didn't think of that.)
The Time Lord winced when the events of the marooning were brought up and even more so at the sudden bear hug and thump. "About that..well....things were happening rather quickly and I didn't have much time to go back. It seemed you were meant to be back there for a while and the TARDIS just insisted me leaving. There are times when I just can't argue with her at all. I'm sorry about that! But things worked out well, didn't they? And the ice world I thought you would enjoy."
Under all these greeting pleasentries the Doctor's mind was whirling. The Daleks, and a peace mission to them! Didn't the council know what they were getting into, what the Daleks were capable of? Didn't his own experiences show they weren't to be trusted? Peace and Daleks, the two words didn't even mesh. And why did they even attempt such a thing, since the Daleks had (at least till now) been unaware of the location of Gallifrey. Another feeling of foreboding crept in.
Someone had to have told them!
He swallowed hard, this was almost unconcievable! If some Time Lord of Lady had gone over to the Daleks and revealed their whereabouts that would be treason in the highest order. Surely no-one would have such hatred for his or her own kind to.....well, there was one that sprang to mind but surely even he......
He shook his head. Speculations would get him nowhere, he needed facts, cold hard facts. And he needed to get his brother and wife somewhere safe.
"Look'" he said at length. "There's no reason why you should risk going back into the citadel. If I'm caught then I think I'll be able to deal with them but if we're all in the same spot they'll liable to try to use you against me. I've strengthened my resistance to mind probes over the centuries but I don't think either of you had to. I've got to get back and hook up to the Matrix to find out what's going on, if it will let me. Perhaps you two should go to a cottage in the country until this blows over?"
He had to say it even though he felt they both might likely refuse. He just didn't want to put them in any more danger than they already were.
"There's something you must know, anytime anyone is connected with me, even remotely, they usually end up being hurt or worse, mentally and physically! It seems to be a curse knowing me, I'm afraid."

Slightly surprised by how eager this Meddler person was to meet him, Tyler grinned, allowing the man to grasp his hand tightly.
Tyler spoke to the Meddler, "I believe, sir, that we may have met before...but I could be mistaken...your name sounds familiar to me."
Somehow it didn't surprise Tyler that this Meddler knew his brother. It almost seemed that everyone knew him.
Tyler glanced back at the Meddler at the advice that he'd just given -- the advice about ditching the Time Lord names. "Well, I don't introduce myself using my real name to everyone...." he eyed his brother. "But would a name that I sometimes call myself be safer? The Hunter?"
Looking away for a moment, Tyler replied to the Meddler, "Well, one of the High Council members hates my family -- has always hated my father. When I was eight, just before going to the Academy, this person broke my arm and....and I was badly injured. I can't say why the High Council or any of the ruling members of Gallifrey would be against me now.....and that's what we were doing here...trying to figure out a few things...."
Tyler frowned at his brother and shook his head. "How can I avoid being connected to you, anyway? You're my brother...my twin......" The Doctor had lied to the Meddler about him just being the Doctor's friend.
"I don't care..." then he looked at his wife Kyra. "What do you want to do?" He knew that his brother was more than able to take care of himself, but Kyra......he didn't want anything to happen to her.

Kyra looked over at Tyler, wide-eyed as she was brought back into reality. "Hmm?" She looked around and saw the new person. Who was he? He wasn't against them, was he?

Tyler glanced at Kyra, a look of deep concern on his face. "The Doctor wants us to run away and go somewhere quiet while he goes investigating into the Matrix.....what do you want to do?"
He hoped that she would hear his question and stay alert this time. Something was definitely wrong with her, and the problem seemed to only be getting worse.

Tylerelrug spoke to the Meddler, "I believe, sir, that we may have met before...but I could be mistaken...your name sounds familiar to me."
"Could be," the Meddler allowed. "Oi ain't been back to Gallifrey for centuries, an' Oi can't say yehr name sounds familiar like - no offense, mind - but it could be we've met. Ever spent much time travellin' through Sol-3's history?"
"Well, I don't introduce myself using my real name to everyone...." Tylerelrug seemed to glare at the Doctor. "But would a name that I sometimes call myself be safer? The Hunter?"
"It's got a ring to it, Oi'll give it that," mused the Meddler. "Yeh jus' wanna be careful wit' a name like that. People'll react to it, yeh unnerstan'? An' it'll come to define yeh, perhaps more than yeh want. But Oi do like the sound o' it."
Looking away for a moment, Tylerelrug - no, the Meddler corrected himself, The Hunter - replied, "Well, one of the High Council members hates my family -- has always hated my father. When I was eight, just before going to the Academy, this person broke my arm and....and I was badly injured. I can't say why the High Council or any of the ruling members of Gallifrey would be against me now.....and that's what we were doing here...trying to figure out a few things...."
"Could just be one o' the oldest games in the book, then. Using new situations to take care o' old grudges."
The Hunter frowned at the Doctor and shook his head. "How can I avoid being connected to you, anyway? You're my brother...my twin......"
"Yehr what now?" the Meddler echoed, flabbergasted.

Kyra glanced at the new person, then nodded at Tyler. "That sounds like a good idea." She saw the concern on his face. How long had she been unresponsive? She really wanted this to stop before it ruins her relationship with him.

(need you to post in Kids Camp)
The Hunter nodded at the Meddler's response. He couldn't say that he was surprised that this individual had forgotten him -- if they had met -- as he had forgotten as well. "Well, not much time on Sol 3...but I have been there a couple of times....not recently."
The Hunter grinned at the Meddler's assessment of his chosen title name. "Yes....but I like my real name, too." He frowned. He didn't like not being able to go by his real name if he wanted to. Having the choice meant that he himself was able to decide who to reveal it to and who not to.
"Maybe....maybe....but why.....I have never understood why some people hate my family so much."
When the Hunter heard the Meddler ask, "yer what now," he felt like kicking himself. Had he really made that comment out loud? He supposed that he must have. Knowing he should have had that argument with his brother telepathically, he sighed.
"I.....I.....well, the Doctor and I are brothers....twins.....we aren't identical, nor were we ever......."
The Hunter looked away. He knew that he shouldn't just go around revealing that information to just anyone. However, he had been frustrated and angry with the Doctor for lying about his relationship towards him, that and the suggestion that he should just run off somewhere quiet while his brother walked into danger....
Kyra's response drew him back again into reality. Tyler thought to himself, "So....so she would rather run away somewhere. Well, if that was what she wanted to do, then we will do it."
"All right," the Hunter said out loud. "If you want to run away, like we were saying before, we can do that.....but....but did you want to talk to the common people? Do something......?"

The Doctor shook his head. How many people had been killed over the centuries that had been with him or even remotely connected to him? To even think of his brother going through any capture an itterogation was almost too much for him. And his wife? He wouldn't be able to bear it.
"Look," he said at length. "It's all very well tracing the family tree but you just don't understand what the council can be capable of. Oh they play the high and mighty and benevolent rulers but if there's something that challenges their supremacy they can quickly revert to being just as savage as any primitive race. And the problem is they have the technology to do some very real damage to whomever opposes them. Believe me, I know."
He paused as the sound of footsteps had approached their hiding place but relaxed as they faded once more. "It seems they're given up searching, this area anyway. No, I'll not risk you or Kyra. I have no right to ask that. I've been in the Matrix before so hopefully I can make contact with it from a distance. Say, a storage closet in the main Great Hall. Please try to find a safe haven for you both! And you," Here he turned to the Meddler. "I can't tell you what to do but I will warn you, I have a lot of enemies about, it seems and some I'm not even aware of. Threats come at all angles at me, I'm afraid."
