Simon had just been shot. The shot had been to the stomach, and remembering his first aid training, he had managed to patch it up. In the last few weeks, he had discovered the “Miracle Day” phenomenon. Every single human was immortal. What this meant for Simon, was unknown at first, but he had learned what it had meant a few weeks ago. He had been stabbed near the heart, and rushed to hospital. The wound should have been fatal, but doctors dressed it, and explained how lucky he was that the miracle had happened. He was only 19 now, and even though he was an alien, his physiology was close enough to a human’s physiology so as to not arouse suspicion.
Simon stumbled through the streets, wincing. He had lost his usual denim jacket 2 years ago, when he had gone missing in action from torchwood. He had been stuck in a time lock for those two years, which had been weird. He had been 17 when this had happened, but being an alien and all, it did not matter as much. He stumbled past an old building, and collapsed near it. The pain he felt from being shot in the stomach was terrible, and he moaned as he kept turning invisible and visible. Luckily, no one was around this building.
Being an invisiblate and all, Simon could turn invisible at will, but only in the sense that no one consciously knew he was there. On a sub conscious level, maybe they knew he was there. But on that main conscious level, he would not be there at all. He groaned in pain as he stabilized visibly, and said “I miss Owen harper Rassilon it! I miss Toshiko! And I miss Ianto, Gwen and Jack! Where are you guys?!” He had heard all about the 456 crisis, and Tosh and Owen’s deaths. Now, he was immortal due to the miracle, when they should have survived if it had happened earlier in the year, or in the last few years. His wounds, which, due to his invisiblate physiology, usually heal faster then humans, now healed at a human pace. The fatal wound from a few weeks ago had only started healing.

Gwen had to get out of that stuffy, terrible room. Jack was on a bar and clubbing excursion, Esther was quickly turning into a weepy mess, and she simply did not like Rex very much at the moment.
The streets of Washington were filled with people. Some of them had bad injuries and were simply walking around. A lot of people had dawned the soulless masks. The entire city, country, world; it was all going to hell. It was times like this that she missed the old days. Tosh, Owen, Ianto-- she even missed Suzie to some extent! Gwen put her hands in her jacket pocket and kicked a can that was on the sidewalk. Washington was a sty.
Suddenly, she heard a familiar voice. "I miss Owen harper Rassilon it! I miss Toshiko! And I miss Ianto, Gwen and Jack! Where are you guys?!" Barely a whisper had escaped Gwen's mouth. Two years. "Simon?" She began sprinting in the direction of the voice. Finally, she came upon a terrible sight. Simon was slumped up against a wall, bleeding. He had been shot!
Gwen ran and knelt beside him. "Simon, you're hurt! We need to get you somewhere safe!"

As Simon slumped against that wall, he looked up and saw Gwen Cooper, his former team mate from torchwood. As she said to him ”Simon, you're hurt! We need to get you somewhere safe!” , he smiled weakly and just nodded. He struggled to his feet, then looked at Gwen. He said “Gwen, this stomach wound? Not the worst one I have right now.” He unbuttoned the first button of his shirt, and underneath, the bandage near his heart was shown. He weakly said “Yeah that happened a few weeks ago. And also, good to see you after two years.” He still had that weak smile on his face as he buttoned up the button, and groaned.
Simon said “Even though we need to get somewhere safe, can we still catch up? I mean, two years. That’s a long time to go without seeing a team mate. Even though you were a bit apprehensive about me for a while.” He remembered the first few months of being in torchwood. Jack had been nice to him. Owen had teased him mercilessly. Tosh had been sympathetic. Ianto had tried to help a bit. Gwen…well, back then, she had not spoken to him that much.
As the bleeding got a bit worse, and Simon felt dizzy, he leaned against the wall again and quietly said “Until a few months ago, I was stuck in a time lock Gwen. The entire outside world was blocked off to me. I was locked, inside a room, where time ran the same as it did on the other side, but until a few months ago, the lock prevented me getting out. I was stuck in that house with the time lock on it for two years. That’s where I was….” He felt weaker and he faintly said “I think we should get me somewhere safe Gwen..”

"Well, I wouldn't worry about sticking out like a sore thumb. Half of these people here are in the same boat as you." Gwen looked around the street at the masses of the sick and injured. "What a time for you to get back, huh? I bet that time lock looks pretty good right about now."
She found a car on the street that was unlocked. Gwen opened up the passenger door and helped Simon in, getting in the driver's seat herself. She hot-wired it and was off. "So, basically what happened since you've been gone; short version. Tosh and Owen..." She already encountered the first lump in her throat. "They're gone, so's Ianto. I have a kid now, Jack's still here. There's also two new people, Rex and Esther. Esther's a bit green, Rex is a bit... well you'll meet Rex I suppose. We're investigating the miracle, though it's not going so well." Gwen skidded to halt outside the safe house, and turned to Simon. "Sorry if my driving was bad, I'm still getting used to these American roads and cars. In any case, we're here."
She got out of the car and went over to the passenger side door, to help Simon out.

Simon was relieved that he could sit down in the car, as sitting on the hard ground was not great. As she said “So, basically what happened since you've been gone; short version. Tosh and Owen...They're gone, so's Ianto. I have a kid now, Jack's still here. There's also two new people, Rex and Esther. Esther's a bit green, Rex is a bit... well you'll meet Rex I suppose. We're investigating the miracle, though it's not going so well.” When they skidded to a halt outside of a house, and she helped him out, Simon’s eyes were wide, and a tear fell down his cheek. He said “I didn’t know Owen and Tosh were gone, or Ianto was as well. God rest all of them.”
Simon said “How is Jack? And the time lock seems like a good place right now. What I don’t really understand, is how the Miracle affected me? I mean, if it was just for humanity, ok, that would make sense, but to strike even aliens now? That is just odd. And you’re driving was fine. Mine’s a lot worse. And you have a kid? That’s great, congratulations. Boy or girl?” He looked at his black shirt, and noticed how the blood was still seeping a bit. He said “If you’ve got any bandages in this house, I can dress the injury myself. And I usually don’t worry about sticking out like a sore thumb.”
Simon said “Two new members eh? Are either of them feeling the effects of the Miracle? and I will help anyway I can in investigating the Miracle. I always was the best at getting into places that you guys couldn’t, mainly due to my special talent for disappearing.” He smiled weakly, but gasped as he tried to walk forward a single step, but the pain of moving on his own was too bad, due to the bullet wound in his stomach. He held onto the top of the car and said “Gwen, can you help me walk? I didn’t hurt my ankle or anything; it is just that, the shot wound hurts very badly.” Simon’s normally pale face was even paler than usual.

"Yeah, of course." Gwen threaded her arm under Simon's shoulders to help him maintain his balance. "I suppose it is a bit odd that the miracle's affecting humans. But then again, you're an 'alien', not an 'alien'. You're not like a slitheen or something. I think you're close enough to human that you just slipped by." She walked up towards their safe house, still helping him move.
"And to answer you're other questions, Jack's stressing out with this miracle thing. It's changed him in just the opposite direction as the rest of us. He can die, he's not healing; it's bad. And one of the new members is kind of the same as you. He got a pole in his heart a while back and is still healing. I think he's got some bandages or something that you can use to bandage your wounds.
Finally, they reached the door. Gwen smiled a toothy smile at Simon as she opened the door. "And her name is Anwen."

Simon’s jaw seemed to drop as Gwen told him “Jack's stressing out with this miracle thing. It's changed him in just the opposite direction as the rest of us. He can die, he's not healing; it's bad.” Simon said “that’s not good for Jack. Maybe the Miracle just did something to him. Maybe it made every mortal person Immortal, and it made Jack mortal since he was Immortal. But to think, that after thinking he’s Jack Harkness, Immortal man. He can come back from anything, for so long, that now, he can die while we survive. It is mind boggling.” Simon was grateful for Gwen helping him to walk.
Simon said “True. My physiology is very similar to humans. Plus, maybe it was just making everyone immortal. Well, apart from Jack of course. And I’m fairly certain that the only differences between me, and a human, are that I’ll live into my three hundreds at least, due to my species lifespans, I can turn invisible, my heart beat is faster than a humans and we heal faster than humans. The strange thing is that now I heal at a human pace. This Miracle is affecting things on more then just a not being able to die level.”
Simon was grateful that there would be some bandages, and when Gwen told him her daughter’s name was Anwen, he smiled and said “I am happy for you Gwen. How’s Rhys by the way?” Simon managed to walk a few steps into the safe house, groaning as he did. He said “Ok, I know I technically have been MIA from torchwood since I was in that time lock, but I am back now, and I want to help Gwen. So, I’m going to stay, and help anyway I can. Besides, I want to find out about the Miracle more. Maybe its due to an effect in the morphic field around earth. One small change to a morphic field can be a dangerous thing. It’s what allows evolution of DNA.” Simon had never revealed it before, but he had a lot of knowledge about morphic fields and that sort of stuff.

"Oh Rhys is fine. He was sent back to Wales when Jack and I were arrested by the U.S Government." She helped Simon over the door's threshold. "Oh, by the way; we're enemies of the state now! I swear after all we did in Torchwood this is how the world repays us..." Gwen looked distant for a moment, but kept helping Simon in.
"In any case, Rhys actually had the same idea as you. He figured that if Jack was immortal before, and now everyone else is immortal, the 'wires got crossed'" She walked to one of the chairs and helped Simon into it. "And it's interesting that you mention morphic fields, because that's the idea Jack has been having. We're still not quite sure what it is though, in any case." She looked around the room. "I wonder where everyone is..." Gwen cupped her hands around her mouth and yelled out to the safehouse. "Jack? Esther? Rex? Anybody?"

Rex was typing something in a computer when he saw Gwen walked in with a wounded man. He frowned. After the Miracle had occurred, humans were supposed to be immortal. He hurried over, supporting the man on the opposite side of Gwen. With his free hand, he offered a hand shake. "Rex Matheson." he told him.
The Torchwood 3 member looked at Gwen. "Who is this, how is he dying, and where did you find him?" he asked.

Simon shook Rex’s hand and he said “My names Simon Parker. And maybe I should show you.” He unbuttoned the top two buttons of his shirt, and showed his bandaged stab wound near his heart. He rebuttoned his shirt and he said “Also, I got shot in the stomach. And I knew Gwen a while ago. We were in torchwood together. It’s a really long story how I got stuck somewhere for two years, and only found Gwen a while ago.” He smiled weakly, but then he groaned and he said “Do you have any bandages Rex? I think I should dress the gun wound.”
Simon then looked at Gwen and he said “And it is very possible that the morphic field around earth has been tampered with. Something might want the human race to be able to survive anything, just for the soul purpose of helping an earth company. Or, just for enjoyment. Some species out there in the universe have sadistic tendencies. Daleks are a good example. Though, they are more xenophobes. Sorry Rex, one thing you should know about me. I’m an expert on alien races. It is mainly because I can understand them.” Smiling at his little in joke, Simon ignored his stomach wound. He then said “Now, where’s Jack? And Rex, what injury do you have? I only ask, because I am just checking if you have experienced the Miracle first hand, like me.” Simon had forgotten his bag was on his back, and he shrugged it off.

Gwen listened to what Simon was saying intently. She heard him mention morphic fields and the Daleks, and decided she might have something to interject. When he was done, she added onto his information.
"I agree that the Daleks wouldn't be behind this, even if they had the abilities to." She thought back to her experience with the Daleks, back in what she later learned was the Medusa Cascade. "No, Daleks would have changed the morphic field to kill us all; not keep us alive. They may be uncaring, but they're not gratuitously cruel. They just don't give it any thought one way or the other. And I can't think of any other aliens that'd be powerful enough to do something like this. Except maybe Cybermen but they'd just be trying to upgrade us wouldn't they. She thought on that for a second, and then remembered the other thing she was going to say. "Oh! And about Jack, he's been gallivanting about the bars. Celebrating his mortality, I suppose."

Rex sighed. "The thing is, we don't even have any suspects." he admitted.
He looked around the room, setting Simon down. "All we can tell is that it affected everyone except for you and Jack, and all the animals."

Simon said “It is affecting me Rex. People don’t usually survive being knifed near the heart, because the blood would rush out of the wound.” Spotting a bandage near him, he grabbed it, unbuttoned the three lower buttons of his shirt and he dressed the wound he had sustained earlier from getting shot. He then buttoned up the buttons he had unbuttoned. He rummaged through his bag, and found what he was looking for. Pulling out a sonic screwdriver, he flipped it and said “Ok, now you guys also have a Sonic Screwdriver, which an old friend of mine gave me a couple of years, plus, you’ve got me. And I bring something very useful to help.” He smiled.
Simon focused, and then he turned invisible. He was still there, but they consciously would be ignoring him. He turned visible again and said “Another thing you guys have to help investigate the Miracle.” Simon looked at the sonic, and as it was aimed at Rex, he scanned him with the screwdriver. He said “Your sodium levels are low Rex. You should get something salty into you.” He pocketed his screwdriver, and he rubbed his face with his hands. He said “Ok, so of course Daleks wouldn’t do this. If they had done this, then they would have modified the morphic field so all humans would die. And cybermen don’t have the technology capable of messing with a morphic field.”
Simon took a few deep breathes, and then he continued. He said “Whatever has done this has done it for a certain reason. If it just wants to see how far humans can be pushed, then it is one of the most sadistic things I will ever have heard of. If it has done this as a twisted experiment, to see if it works on humans, or just to figure out how to do this to its own race, then maybe it’s a scientific expedition race. Other than that, my theories are just theories, as are the previous things I just said. And Jack shouldn’t celebrate his mortality. At least he might be able to get drunk now. He used to complain about not getting drunk.” Simon looked at Gwen, and then Rex and said “Well, you’ve got yourself another team member. One who will help no matter what.”

"Well," Gwen said, clicking her tongue. "That's all well and good, but still, we don't have a place to start, unless Rex has figured out anything."
Gwen looked over at Rex. "Hopefully, you've figured out something while the rest of us have been out. Who knows! Maybe you might be somewhat useful!" After Gwen's feigned enthusiasm, she sat down at another desk, turning the chair to face Rex's and thus Rex and Simon, crossed her legs and looked at the two of them.

Rex watched Simon dress his wound, a mundane look on his face.
It is affecting me Rex." Simon insisted, "People don’t usually survive being knifed near the heart, because the blood would rush out of the wound.”
Rex frowned. "That's a given." he conceded.
Rex placed both hands on the keyboard of the computer and typed something in at a fast pace. "Do you have a file yet?" he asked, practically having already typed the words 'Simon' and 'Invisibrate' on the screen.
“Ok, now you guys also have a Sonic Screwdriver, which an old friend of mine gave me a couple of years, plus, you’ve got me. And I bring something very useful to help.” Simon said, lifting the tool.
Rex knew all about people with Sonic Screwdrivers. He was part of Torchwood, how could he not? He type the word 'Doctor' on a file 56 and came up with a man, in a blue suit, ad a long brown trenchcoat. He shifted the computer so that Simon could see. "Was this your 'old friend'?" he asked.
All of a sudden, Rex forgot Simon. For a second, it was just him and Gwen, no Simon. "Oh, Gwen, tell me about the mission-" Simon was back, there was three Torchwood members again, he rembered Simon.
"You're good..." he said, his tone carrying a hint of envy.
“Another thing you guys have to help investigate the Miracle.” Simon said before pointing the Screwdriver at him, “Your sodium levels are low Rex. You should get something salty into you.”
Rex frowned again. "So I've heard." the man replied.
“Ok, so of course Daleks wouldn’t do this. If they had done this, then they would have modified the morphic field so all humans would die. And cybermen don’t have the technology capable of messing with a morphic field.”
Rex sighed, as if he'd heard all this before. Whatever has done this has done it for a certain reason. He used to complain about not getting drunk.”
"Yes, yes, I know. And Jack can do anything he wants, he always does." Rex claimed.
Simon looked from Gwen to him. “Well, you’ve got yourself another team member. One who will help no matter what."
Rex didn't like the way he said that. It sounded...distrusting. Disturbing. He was Glad that Gwen started speaking. "Well," Gwen said, clicking her tongue. "That's all well and good, but still, we don't have a place to start, unless Rex has figured out anything."
It was obvious she didn't think he had.
"Hopefully, you've figured out something while the rest of us have been out. Who knows! Maybe you might be somewhat useful!"
Rex's frown intensified. He stood up, bring his pointer finger up. "Theory one: Silurians. Not only do they have the technology but it would benefit them. Maybe they attempted to change only themselves and accidentally affected us as well. Theory two," his middle finger came next to it, "Sontarans. They may try to be affecting us with a morphic field to overload the rate of human population. Army, possibly?"
