"Okay Bromthel." Adagio was surprised she actually got a response, but then set her mind to remember the information. Bromthel, it was a very different name, she should be able to remember it.
Silence fell and Adagio let herself look around as she walked. When she heard Bromthel ask her a questionshe thought on it for a moment before replying. "Well, I really don't know him when it comes down to it. We've only just met, and then the cloister bells went off and it was either go with him or die with the rest of the Earth. I've only actually traveled through time and space once before but not so... hurriedly I guess is the word."
The Meddler had been banished from Yith? Surely he was not that bad. From what Adagio had found out about him so far he was playful, but he did not seem the type to actually harm anyone. Then again though, she really did not know the man. "He was really reluctant to come here, but he told me that coming here held our best chance of finding out what exactly happened to the Earth."
They went on a little further in silence before Adagio decided to ask something. "So you hate him because he is a Time Lord? Or has he committed an offense?" In a way she did not want to know the answer, it was far better to keep her starry eyed perception of him, but she did need to know more.

Bromthiel listened to Adagio's explanations. "He was really reluctant to come here, but he told me that coming here held our best chance of finding out what exactly happened to the Earth."
"The Meddler said that?" Bromthiel said with what sounded like amusement. "A desperate Time Lord, indeed. But why should he care?"
They went on a little further in silence before Adagio decided to ask something. "So you hate him because he is a Time Lord? Or has he committed an offense?"
"Ah, a tale there is. Yith, Gallifrey: Two Powers. Rivals, from time past. Two philosophies. Ours: to preserve the Great Race. Theirs: to rule all time. We did not hate them. They did not hate us, either. But, there was no trust."
Bromthiel twisted onto an intersection, and continued rolling. "The Meddler. Reaver. A renegade, time-changer. He spins, weaves, cuts," its voice sounded as if the words were distasteful. "He changes at will. Timelines changed, history reshaped. Time and time again. He threatens the Race. His visage is an offense. He is Paradox. He is unwelcome. Our history must not change. He could, would, change it."
Ahead of the unusual pair, a vast stepped pyramid rose above the surrounding buildings. "The Archive is there. All the knowledge of the Race. Follow me within."

Why did the Meddler care about the Earth? That was a question she really could not answer. Bromthiel probably could deduce why better than she did. "I would hope he cares because a whole race died today, but I can't actually say. Anything I say would be putting words in his mouth."
So they did not like the Meddler or his race, or at least that was what it seemed like. Gallifrey, was it really that bad? Yith seemed like a pretty peaceful planet so far, but Adagio wondered about the other planet. Surely not everyone was the same, a whole world could not be lumped into one category. She knew the Timelords lived for a long time, surely they could change over time.
When they got to the Pyramid Adagio looked up at it but followed obediently. Popping one of the little radiation candies in her mouth, she ate it remembering how important they were.

It was difficult to tell if the Archive was bigger on the inside than on the outside or not, since it was easily the size of downtown London. Shelves lined the walls and divided the rooms into broad corridors, wide enough for the Great Race to move two abreast. And everywhere there were tables, tables where members of the Race sat (stood? reclined?) at the work of writing more books on sheets of thin metal with pens of acid.
Bromthiel led Adagio up several ramps, and was just beginning to turn through a door when a voice boomed out "Excuse me? Ma'am? Are you... are you from... Earth?"
It was another member of the Great Race, rolling towards her in a slightly clumsy fashion. Bromthiel seemed to direct its attention towards the newcomer. "Adagio is. But return to your scribing. Her goals serve you too."
"I will, but... Well, they told me that I'd be returning home soon. To Baltimore. And now, they tell me I can't." It made an embarrassed sound, and extended a tentacle. "I'm sorry," it said sheepishly. "I'm Peter Salk, and I don't mean to... that is, well, I saw someone normal looking, and I just forgot myself. But do you know what's going on? We're all stuck here."

Adagio was looking around at all the scribes thinking about how amazing it would be to get a peek at even one of the metal sheets that the great race was writing on when she heard someone call out. It was another of the great race, but somehow this one sounded a lot more... human in a way.
She was going to answer when Bromthiel interrupted her. However, when Peter introduced himself and asked another question she made sure to answer before Bromthiel could. "Hi Peter. Well you see all I know at the moment is that cloister bells went off and the Earth was destroyed. I'm here to try to fix the problem with my friends."
Biting her lip she wondered if maybe she should have broken the situation to Peter a little easier. However the damage was already done.

The creature calling itself Peter rocked backwards. "Destroyed?" it (he?) said in alarm. "It was destroyed?"
Bromthiel made a booming sort of noise. "Never existed. To use more precise phrasing. Not in your era."
"But that's impossible! I'm from Earth!"
"This is very true. But time is not linear. You were, but no more."
Two of Peter's tentacles took Adagio's hands. "But you say you can fix it? Please, tell me that's true." He sounded terrified, and faintly hopeful. "Please! I've got a family..."
His grip began to tighten as he became somewhat hysterical.

Yeah, flat out telling him was a big mistake. At least though when Bromthiel answered it gave her a bit more insight into the situation. Time was not linear, so she was an Earthling from a planet that never existed, talk about a head rush.
Adagio felt herself being grabbed and for one felt rather fearful. Peter's desperation was apparent, and she felt bad for him and his family, but he was beginning to crush her hands. "P-Please Peter you're really starting to hurt me. You think I didn't lose family as well? My friends and I are going to do our best to bring the Earth back and that's all I can promise. Really my faith is less in me and more in The Meddler and Alec. I'm just an Earthling with a vague knowledge of time travel and space."
Peter was really crushing her hands and in desperation she started trying to tug her hands back. She had tried her best after the initial shock to not think about her home, but Peter was bringing it sharply in to perspective. If she failed in her task, all of her friends and family would be lost forever.

"Peter! Release her!" Bromthiel boomed. "She will do what she can do. Your acts do not help."
Peter's grip became tighter still as his words became frantic. "I've been trapped here for years! And I can't go home?"
"Assistance! To me!" Bromthiel called, "A guest mind to be restrained! Subdue him! Gently!"
Two more members of the Great Race rolled into view and deftly extracted Adagio from Peter's frenzied grasp. Firmly, but not apparently harshly, they led him away, shouting. "Guest? Guest! You kidnap me, hold me against my will, and I'm a guest?" Soon, all that was left behind was the fading sound of his hysterical laughter.
"I apologize," Bromthiel said. "I failed in my duties. That should not happen. Have you been injured? Did my negligence harm you? Shall I bring you aid?"

As Peter became more frantic Adagio could feel her hand starting to separate from her main wrist. It reminded her of the time she had got her hand stuck in a pair of fake handcuffs while playing cops as a child and had tried her hardest to get them off without assistance. If he continued Peter was going to crush her wrists. She had a high tolerance for pain, but even she could get to a point when it was too much.
Just as the pain started to get unbearable Peter was assisted away. Rubbing her bright red wrists, Adagio bit back a few tears but was unable to stop them all. Fat tears rolled down her cheek as she tried to restrain herself. "I'm fine! He nearly ripped my hands off! What exactly is going on here? Was he really abducted?" Adagio felt like running as far and as fast away as possible but she knew she had no choice but to stay. What would Alec and the Meddler say if she came back empty handed?
Looking at her wrists Adagio noticed that they were already starting to swell and change colors. Today had really not been her day."Please, lets just go and get this done."

"I'm fine! He nearly ripped my hands off! What exactly is going on here? Was he really abducted?"
"He is a guest, here," Bromthiel answered. "We borrow his body a while. His mind was brought here. We care for him, now. His body's mind is lost forever. Lost, with your lost world."
It rolled through the door, into another huge room filled with books. "The Archives of Earth. Records of all our visits. Where do we look first?"

"You borrow his WHAT?" Surely he was joking. That had to be the worst thing someone could do t somebody else. Steal their identity without consent and trap them in a different body. "You're telling me you just take people's minds and fill their bodies without any consent? For how long?"
When he asked where they should look first Adagio huffed. The Daleks were going back to nineteen something so surely that meant it would have to be later than that. "We need to look from the nineteen-hundreds to present day I think. I'm not one hundred percent sure though."
Angry that she had let herself trust Bromthiel and that Peter was probably someone like her before his mind was taken, Adagio crossed her arms. She could feel the heat coming off her wrists and she really wanted some ice, but the faster she got this done the faster she could leave.

"You borrow his WHAT? You're telling me you just take people's minds and fill their bodies without any consent? For how long?"
"For the Race's good. It is a necessity. We must find new homes. We study others. We learn all we can from them. We choose a new home. We migrate across spacetime. The Race will endure."
When he asked where they should look first Adagio huffed. The Daleks were going back to nineteen something so surely that meant it would have to be later than that. "We need to look from the nineteen-hundreds to present day I think. I'm not one hundred percent sure though."
"Then we go this way," Bromthiel said, twisting and rolling towards the right. "AD time reckoning, yes? Here are the records."
The shelves were vast, thousands of metal-bound tomes of uniform size and thickness, filling shelves that stretched from floor to ceiling. Bromthiel watched the shelves roll past, then finally came to a halt. "Here, Adagio. The deviation starts here." It pulled a book down and handed it to her. "Speak, should you need more."

Following quietly, Adagio listened without saying anything in reply. The thought of being abducted from her body and put into a new one was frightening, but she had bigger fish to fry at the moment.
Picking up the offered book, Adagio flipped through it looking for the deviation. After a moment a vacant expression came to her face. The rather heavy book wobbled in her hand and just before she dropped it she came to herself. Pacing back and forth, she began to read out loud.
"A great battle broke forth between the Asmarths and the Caliganians. During which time a time and space travel malfunction happened. The Caliganians appeared in the Sol system and eventually made their way to the planet Earth. In a bid to rule this uncharted solar system, they attacked the unsuspecting planet. Due to further malfunctions the Earth and the Caliganians were eventually mutually destroyed."
Slamming the book shut, Adagio frowned.
"We need to find a way to get those idiots from somehow breaking the original time line of our solar system."
Putting the book under her arm she began to take notes on her little pad. The boys would be happy to know she found the answer to the beginning of their problem.

"You are finished, then?" Bromthiel asked. "If you are, we shall return. I shall lead you out."
It rolled towards the exit. "But do not hurry. If you must study more, than speak. I am your guide, here."

At this point Adagio was quickly losing her patience. Not everything was as it seemed with this race, and she could not help but to think about how they ripped someone out of their body. The very soul of someone! Sighing heavily, she looked over her notes.
"Please lead me back I believe I've done all I can." Now she had to brainstorm a way to keep all this stuff from happening without getting killed.
