Canon/Original Canon
Name: Charlotte Elspeth Pollard (goes by “Charley”)
Age: 19
Species: Human
Planet of Origin: Earth
Occupation:Edwardian Adventuress Companion of the Eighth Doctor
Physical Description: Charley is somewhat short and stands at a height of about 5’4”. She has a pretty petite, though somewhat curvy figure. She has blue eyes, and because of her scoffing at her upper-class upbringing, Charley wears her blonde hair rather short, generally between her chin and the top of her shoulders. She has fair skin, and doesn’t really seem to tan very well because of her light complexion.
Charley generally wears clothes that she deems “practical,” though perhaps this is just another extension of her distaste of how she was raised. More often than not, she dons a pair of trousers and a blouse, perhaps accompanied by a jacket or sweater, as per the weather. When the occasion calls, Charley will indeed dress up, whether in a dress or skirt and fancier blouse. She sometimes wears a hat, perhaps as part of a disguise or something that compliments fancier attire.
Personality: Charley is perhaps wiser than her years, rather intelligent for her age. She also is witty, and sometimes sarcastic. Despite the fact that she will make sardonic comments about the places they’ve landed, Charley really does enjoy travelling with the Doctor. She has always had a desire for adventure. She was brought up in a rather well-to-do family, and she felt positively stifled. Ever since she ran away, Charley found herself with the Doctor and has loved it. The excitement is something that thrills her, and she wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Charley is also rather stubborn. Her strong-will keeps her close to the Doctor – not to mention, alive. She can be impulsive, which can be both a good and bad thing. She’s a very lively young woman, willing to try anything and very used to the running. Her loyalty to the Doctor is strong. She also can be a very caring, empathetic individual, and she’s been known to help out those in need during their travels together. Charley can be self-sacrificial, knowing that what she would give would help the greater good.
History: Charley was born on April 15, 1912 in Hampshire, England. She was brought up in a very well-to-do family with her mother, Lady Louisa Pollard, and her two sisters, Margaret and Cecilia. As a young girl, she loved Christmas, especially the plum puddings that were made by their cook, Edith. Apparently Charley was the only person in their household that showed any sort of kindness for Edith, making it hard when Charley would later disappear (presumably dead). Charley disliked the way that she was raised tremendously, from the dresses to how she was expected to behave. Parties, food, people... All of it was too much for her. Charley much preferred to be out there, amongst the world, travelling and experiencing all that it held for her. She fancied herself an Edwardian Adventuress, and with that, she ran away from home.
Charley stowed away on the R101, disguised as a male crew member. She was to meet a young man in Singapore on New Year’s Day in 1931. However, it was not her destiny – the R101 was fated to crash, and Charley was supposed to die. Instead, she met the Doctor during the R101’s last hours, helping him to discover a secret mission that was happening on the ship. Charley ended up on the Doctor’s TARDIS by the end of it – saved from the death that she was supposed to have, and thus becoming his newest companion… and a temporal anomaly. The Doctor couldn’t bring himself to take Charley back to her death, and so they began to travel together. It was then that Charley began to write a travel journal, starting with the events of the R101. Later, Charley met Cybermen on an abandoned star destroyer, visited Venice as it was sinking, met Orson Welles, and got stuck in several time loops. Despite all the danger, Charley has seen some wonderful things, and she can’t wait to see what the future will bring them.
