Name: Richard Howell
Age: 27
Species: Human
Planet of Origin: Earth, 19th Century
Occupation: Ex-soldier stranded in the wrong era.
Physical Description: Richard is around 5’ 11” and has a lean but tough and sinewy appearance. His skin is browned through exposure to the sun and his general appearance can be described as “shaggy”. His hair is dark brown. Before the war Richard kept himself fairly neat as far as farmers go, he was usually shaven and he combed his hair. After serving in the army for a year or so he wasn't able to take care of himself as much so his hair became unkempt and he has about a month’s worth of hair growth on his face. His eyes are brown and have dark rings around them due to lack of sleep.
His clothes too are fairly ragged. His shoes are falling apart and ill fitting; his trousers have lost most of their shape and hang from him only drawn in by a length of string tied at the bottom of each leg and a worn leather belt. Attached to his belt are a cartridge box and a bayonet scabbard which are both scuffed and faded by the sun. Richard’s gray wool jacket is the only thing that seems to fit him properly and even then the sleeves are about an inch too short, his gray wool cap has lost its original rigidity and sits limply on his head. He carries an Enfield rifle that looks as rough and well used as the rest of him.
Personality: In his private life Richard was a laid back and generally contented man but after losing his family and joining the Confederate army he became more angry and confrontational, never backing down from a fight or any kind of trouble. Although he’s acts this way on the outside, inwardly he is more sad than angry. He dislikes having too much time to think as all he thinks about is his loss; this causes him to get into a lot of trouble as he tends to get into fights or other mischief in order to take his mind distracted. But deep down Richard is a good man, but he’s been put in a bad situation and his response is to harden himself.
History: Born as the 3rd son of a family with 8 children on a farm in Missouri in 1836 Richard grew up working on his family farm and had a generally happy upbringing. He spent some time in the nearby town but most of his upbringing took place on the farm. He received a very basic education from his father who was fairly intelligent for the time, learning to count and some basic reading and writing though only enough to get by as a farmer. As he grew up he developed a love for the outdoors and thrived in his role as a farm worker, his family had very little but he rarely wanted for more than he had.
At the age of 18 he married his long time sweetheart Josie, Richard moved to his great uncle’s farm and took over its management due to his great uncles increasing age, eventually inheriting it fully when he died. After the birth of his son he felt truly complete. He now had a family and a farm of his own and was in his physical prime at the age of 25, life seemed to be perfect. When the American Civil War broke out in 1861 Richard managed to avoid taking either side in the conflict and remained neutral. However as time passed the divide between pro-Union and pro-Confederate groups in Missouri grew and more and more people were forced to choose sides; Richard however still refused.
Richard’s constant refusal to pick a side in the Civil War led his neighbours, all Union supporters, to start spreading the rumour that he supported the Confederacy but was too scared to admit it. One night a group of pro-Union Jayhawker guerrillas attacked his farm, burning down the buildings, beating Richard into unconsciousness and killing his wife and son. When he awoke and discovered what had happened he was filled with rage and despair, he wanted revenge. He went out and joined the Confederate States army, seeing the Union cause in general as having led to his family’s death. Serving in the army for a number of years he became tough and hardened to the horrors of war.
Though he had become a harder and colder man he was still filled with pure despair at the loss of his wife and son and would often think of them. In 1863 after a long march across country Richard and the rest of the army set up camp for the night, Richard chose a spot under a large tree to sleep. What he didn’t know however was that he was sleeping directly on a time rift, the rift sucked him in and transported him through time to the 21st century.
Additional medical information Although considered to be healthy in his own time (mainly because he wasn't suffering from a serious disease), albeit somewhat malnourished and ragged, by modern standards he is fairly unhealthy having never benefited from public healthcare or immunisations.
