Name: Arian Cadence
Age: 25
Species: Cygni-human hybrid.
The Cygni race originated on a planet orbiting the star Alpha Cygni. They closely resemble humans with slightly longer fingers and more defined jawlines, but their major defining feature is their skin, which in the dark gives off a slight yellow glow. The cygni’s brain evolved as their major feature, and at some point the race evolved psychic ability, which grew stronger as the generations went on. Today, the Cygni are a peaceful race, but they make decisions quickly due to set-up psychic forums, which can connect any number of people and share their thoughts among themselves, making debates and voting nearly instantaneous. The Cygni’s mental abilities also lead to a few fairly useless parlor tricks, mostly involving the manipulation of natural energy currents around their bodies, which are abnormally high due to the psychic abilities and as such account for the glowing skin.
The Cygni developed space travel several thousand years before humankind, and a few hundred years afterwards they had mapped out a vast number of inhabitable planets. However, governmental and ethic debates kept the project of galactic expansion busy for several centuries, but when the technology for their planet-wide forums came to fruition, the matter was resolved entirely within 2 hours. A few expeditionary pods, containing one Cygni each, were sent to an equally few inhabitable planets. One in particular was sent to Earth, however when it arrived, it kind of, sort of…crashed. The stasis mechanism was broken and the pod idled, its cargo still fast asleep.
Planet of Origin: Earth
Occupation: Grad student, often working as an intern
Physical Description: Arian, despite his alien-hybrid origins, looks precisely like any human should. By that, I mean he has perfect piano fingers (though he can’t play to save his life), and skin, and hair, and all the other things a plain old human has. Oh, and he glows in the dark. A bit. Not as much as his purely Cygni ancestors, but in the pitch dark his skin can still be seen. Arian looks rather unassuming (if there’s a bit of light around), curly brown hair, contemporary dress (often a button up shirt left completely unbuttoned with a T-shirt under it and a pair of jeans or khakis). If he’s working, he simply buttons up the shirt, tucks it in, and fetches a tie from somewhere and he looks perfectly presentable.
Arian has discovered a few interesting abilities, though in actuality they seem to be fairly useless in most situations. He has inherited the Cygni ability to control the psychic energy around their bodies, and as such can make a rather dull looking light show by concentrating the energy into a visible form.
Personality: Arian is someone who is absolutely addicted to learning. He received an above average mental capacity (for a human) from his Cygni heritage, but can only be exposed to so much knowledge so fast on 20th century earth. His mind may also yearn for other mental contact, as he is a low level psychic, and so he tends to go out of his way to meet other people and befriend them. He’s a quick learner, so he can usually adapt to most social situations. However, he’s not your average socialite: He doesn’t just like to socialize, but he NEEDS to, to the point of nearly suffering withdrawl symptoms after having been apart from people for too long. He has a strong sense of justice, but he often hesitates as he thinks a situation over, trying to decide which outcome would be, in fact, the most just.
Being half alien, Arian has an attraction to all things weird and abnormal. One of the reasons he studies physics is that he is much more likely to run into interesting material if he studies more advanced and experimental science, and even more so if he interns at high tech physics labs. As such, he has a habit of running into trouble by stumbling upon things he simply shouldn’t stumble upon.
History: Arian’s father, a Cygni, arrived on earth, but in the crash was stuck in stasis for nearly 100 years. When the battery died (go figure) on the stasis unit, he awoke and, as any good scientist does, began researching. He discovered a large amount about Earth and its customs and peoples before he was, inevitably, found out. Oh, it took him a while for someone to finally catch on, but he did that silly thing that everyone seems to do and fell in love. He was stuck there, anyway. He was lonely enough and found that the humans were advanced enough that he could settle down. Needless to say, it’s hard to hide things like “I’m an alien” from your wife.
Eventually, though, they had a child. A half-Cygni half-human child who turned out mostly normal. The alien (Charil), however, realized that it was becoming harder and harder to keep his status as a non-human a secret, so he decided, for the sake of everyone involved, to sort of go into hiding. He basically became a hermit.
As Arian grew up, he didn’t by any means resent his father, in fact he found himself extremely curious about him. It didn’t take him long to realize that he was an alien (glowing in the dark, even just a bit, isn’t something a kid just doesn’t notice), and his mother (After several years of “when you’re older”) told him the truth. Besides that, he managed to grow up as a completely normal human. He went to primary and secondary, moved on to uni, worked jobs to live, and eventually ended up in a grad school, studying physics. As of yet, no human (that he knows of) knows of his alienhood.
Lately, Arian has begun studying things of more extraterrestrial origins. With little above-ground outlet for that sort of thing, he moved on to finding more underground sources, including websites, secret meetings of alien witnesses (hoo, if they only knew he was half of one, they’d absolutely die!), and other places that are a bit more behind the scenes. His research has led him to knowing of Time Lords (though he doesn’t know their species type), as well as a multitude of other aliens, some of which have the proper names posted around the internet (cybermen, Daleks, etc.), and some of which have been named according to human standards (those cute little fat things, for example). He has learned a bit about alien technology, and even found a few small pieces, which he uses to tinker with. He has a few small “inventions” (innovations might be a better word) that he has made, but as of yet hasn’t used them.
Additional medical information Cygni are actually allergic to chocolate. Go figure. Not deathly, but it’ll make them incredibly sick. Arian’s father had a very, very bad first valantine’s day…And he went and passed his allergy down to his son.
