The Atarien are more commonly known as shapeshifters or changelings through out the galaxy. They have the unique ability to change their entire body to that of another organic being. There are some limits to this ability however. First off, there is a mass limit to thier ability to transform. They can't turn into anything that weighs a lot more or a lot less then them. So insects and elephants, for instance, are out. It is also very difficult to turn into a non-sentient creature. The transformation process does require energy so a bunch of transformations in one day is exhausting and could even result in death. Its the transformation process that requires energy though, a Atarien can stay in any form for as long as he/she needs too.
In their natural form, Atariens resemble a cross between a human and a bird. They have a odd mix of fur and feathers all over their body and have a beak. The Atarien have no wings and cannot fly.
The Atarien are an incredibly long lived and ancient race. They have have had space craft for thousands ofi year. Atarien also have a very long lifespan, lasting about 400 to 500 years. No one, not even the Atarien themselves, know how they aquired the ability to shapeshift. The ability to shapeshift is definitely a gene as there are atarien outcasts who lack the ability to change form
Atarien civilization is currently on a decline, having reached its peak long ago. The Atarien never did have a powerful military force, preferring to rely on espionage. As a result, when a new, barbaric species arrived the atariens did not stand a chance. The invaders left the atarien homeworld in ruins and moved on. Although there is a small fragment of Atariens still living amidst the ruins of the atarien homeworld, most atariens have scattered throughout the galaxy. Some have thoughts of reclaiming their homeworld and rebuilding their former prestige, others just want to live in peace.

Occupation: Tomaith is currently a drifter, moving from one place to another, never really settling down
Personality: Tomaith is rather arrogant and tends to think of the Atariens as superior to most species. He is quick to anger and does not show mercy to his enemies His deepest wish is to rebuild Atarien civilization with himself at its head. To that end, He is looking for other ataria or anyone that may be able to help him reach his goal
History: Tomaith is regarded as a young adult by the Atariens. Tomaith was born to a pair of traveling Atarien merchants but soon grew bored of the peaceful lifestyle and is currently wandering the galaxy looking for more
