My roommate just told me that her boyfriend told her that there is a very new computer virus that is very nasty. It comes through ads on sites, and since proboards has ads, please install an ad blocker so that your computer isn't affected. addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/if you use firefox. If you use another browser, google your version of the program and install it.

I think this might be a cause of oral communication mess ups.
In order for a virus to get on your computer it needs to be downloaded, any .exe files that pop up for download NEVER ACCEPT THEM or run them through a LEGAL virus scanner before opening them.
What I think this is, is a pop up-virus/trojan. A virus on your browser that creates popups every few minutes. Very highly annoying, but quite easy to get rid off as well if you use some virus/trojan scanner.
People who have legal virus software which updates regularly don't have much to fear. Just don't be stupid and download things you don't know where it comes from. In any case, if your computer goes bonkers, pull out the plug and restart pressing F8 and start up in safe mode, from there you can delete such things you don't want on your computer

Thanks -- the thing is, though, that according to my friend's boyfriend, this virus is new. I don't think it's on virus definition software yet.
Also my friend's boyfriend WORKS with computers. He has a job in which he sort of baby-sits important computers at night for a company. He and his friends are computer geeks/nerds -- whatever word you want to use for it -- and several of them got this virus. He got it himself and couldn't find a way of getting it off his computer without reinstalling the operating system.
It's not a pop up ad that they got it through, either. Rather, it's the sort of ad that is in proboards that it comes through. A virus is located in one of these ads, and it somehow gets onto computers when people view that one specific ad. They don't know which ad it is.
Upon receiving more information from her...from him....it does cause pop ups...and it is annoying. One of the popups says that Java needs to be updated or something like that. Don't let it execute that program. If it installs, then it will cause a bunch of other popups, and it also puts something else onto your computer. It says that it needs to scan your computer for viruses or something. Once it does that, it installs another program -- and no one knows what that program does yet.
He did say that if you have the task manager open, you can see it as an exe file if you have the virus. It's two letters and then.exe It might be ef.exe or something. I have to check back when I get home to see what I wrote down.
If you try to use the restore points on your computer, it will just reinstall the virus.

That's nasty then, I know a bit or two about computers but I always trust a geek when they say something XD
Oh, most important thing is USE FIREFOX/MOZILLA. Internet Explorer is known for being vulnerable to viruses and popup shizzle, mozilla stuff is better protected against web viruses.

Well, I really am like Donna sometimes. I really have no luck, maybe it's the redhead thing XD
I just ran into the virus about 2 hours ago, was browsing google for some images and it crack slap gets into your computer without even warning for download. It does work through a popup system and immediately gets into your system. I had that ABP security thingy installed you sent over the link, did absolutely nothing. I just spend 2 hours into safe mode and running my virus scanner for a full scan. That got rid of it luckily.
Still, I feel like I just got bitten in the butt XD There's sadly nothing you can do about this thing.
This is what I did:
As soon as it came in: 1) PULL OUT INTERNET PLUG IMMEDIATLY so it can't feed more. 2) restart in safe mode 3) do a full system scan, it will quarantine the files, then you can delete them.
That was unpleasant though, I hate my karma sometimes.. >__>

the ad blocker thing does work, but you have to subscribe to a list to block ads, or it won't work. I should have said that in this thread. I'm sorry Make sure the virus really is gone. And I have the name of the virus program. If you go into task manager, the program is called wt.exe I'll provide the list of what filters you have to subscribe to in a moment.

After you've installed the ad blocker, go here: adblockplus.org/en/subscriptionsthen go to one of the links after the word "subscribe." Only choose one type (such as Easylist, Fanboy list, Adversity, etc.), or you might end up blocking more than just ads. In other words, you don't want to use two lists with the same language. You CAN use two Easylists -- multiple ones in different languages. For most people here -- the top one says English, click on Easylist in that category and then you should be able to subscribe to it. For those who are in countries where other languages are spoken, you can click on the Easylist for that language as well. Everyone SHOULD at least select the English one because this is a proboards site and the ads are going to be in English.....I'm guessing. Although, I really don't know if the ads are still in English if you visit from another country....
