When I'm weary of cold weather I start planning my flower gardens:) This year in the two on either side of the driveway I want to plant red, white and blue flowers, in their separate places. A patriotic display:)
Never knew how difficult is was to find BLUE flowers, though. A true blue, not purple or violet. Finally decided on the double balloned Astral. Platycodon grandiflorus Astra Semi-Double Blue if you want the true name:)
May have to go with red Salvia. Vincas would be good for the white:) I don't want huge plants so stuff like daisies are out. Nice to look at garden stuff and dream about spring:)

Vincas are awesome My favorite flowers ever.....I like all the colors they come in...and I love it when they are little volunteers and come up on their own. They are so cute. I usually bring little babies ones that germinated in late summer inside before the frost and keep them all fall, winter, and the first part of spring and then plant them in mid May...then they have little babies of their own. This year I don't have any My roomate is allergic to flowers and my parents killed on the ones that I brought home to them. I grew them from seed inside before, but you have to start them in like Feb. and in a greenhouse area or heated.....they don't do very well if you try to grow them and it's cold. I had a tiny little plastic greenhouse that I used for them once. It worked. Gotta go to class.

You could go all 'Alice in Wonderland' and paint some white flowers blue. XD

The General -- That'd look interesting!
"Mummy, what's the Frog Lady doing?" "Nothing, Bobby. Nothing at all."
And, on a completely separate note... I like Freesias. I loves Freesias. They smell wonderful and the look absolutely gorgeous.

Blueberry colored vincas are blueish purple. Well, they're more purple than anything else...but they might work tried to post a picture, but it won't show up....so here is the link www.burpee.com/flowers/vincas/vinca-blueberry-prod001065.htmlI'd include pics of my own flowers, but I'd need to go into my computer and find them. and you could find the red vincas.....and then the white ones...could do it all in vincas

All in vincas?? That woul;d be perfect! That is, if I could find any blue ones. I don't recall seeing any in the local shops. But then I don't let small details like that stop me:) I'm going to start my hunt for vincas! LOL I also have two matching garden globes with frogs perched on top, one on either side of the driveway. I'll put those in the middle of the beds. Up with frogs!

well, since vincas don't like cold weather, you won't find them in stores until a little after some of the other plants, especially if there is a cold spring. I don't know when they're usually available in your area, but in Ohio they aren't available to buy until like middle to late May. But then, if it is a warm spring, they might be available a little earlier, but not before May first.
If you grow them from seed, start them in like Feb., but make sure they have a heated tray or a little green house or something. It takes a while for their seed leaves to open, and if their leaves don't open, they'll die. Naturally, if they germinate outside and it is warm and humid, they'll open their leaves right away. I guess they need darkness in order to germinate....read that somewhere. But once they germinate, they'd need light.
If you want to buy seeds, you can probably order them now through like burpee or another garden place. (the link on there was to burpee's web site). You can even order them live, but I wouldn't order them until May...just so you can plant them soon after you get them.
However, if you buy them in the store, hopefully they will sell them in all the colors.
