I think the best thing I can suggest to the younger people here is...please learn to do something by hand! Draw, paint, cross-stitch, knit, anything that doesn't require batteries or a power source!
It's sad when I see the neighborhood kids wandering about after a power loss, they seem like little zombies. Without their Wii games or computor they act like life no longer has meaning. Learn something new!!! Please!!
besides, if you make something all on your own you'll gain a real pride in yourself. This is something that can be passed from you down through the years. Who knows? Perhaps a future heirloom! I know my quilts I make and give out will be enjoyed for years to come and that knowledge just makes me go all warm and fuzzy inside:)
Who cares if it isn't going to turn out perfect?? Life isn't about perfection, it's about doing!!! So go out to your nearest craft store, look around and just pick up something to do. heck, even a kid's paint-by-number is entertaining. Look at the coloring books! Remember that smell of a brand new box of crayons?? They still smell and work just as good.
Go on, give it a shot. And next time when the power goes out you'll be glad you did!

Great advice!
I'm sixteen right now and practically live on the computer. You'd never think that I grew up without much technology. The most technical piece of equipment in my house was our small computer (that had no internet). I learnt to make do with sticks, a trampoline and my little sister. We made huts and painted and danced in the living room. I still do those today. c:
My drawings will never be heirlooms, but I love scribbling what I see in my brain. Just last night I sketched a piece of Torchwood fan-art.
Aaand my laptop has a battery, so although I don't lose everything I've written or searched, I still lose my internet. I may scream and cry and rip my hair from my head at first, but after a while I just get up and raid the fridge. That's what everyone does when they're bored or have nothing else to do.
