(There is no need to define the words that you use in your post. Most people here are intelligent enough to look up a word if they are uncertain of the definition. Another way of making sure that people understand words that you think they might not is if you give a lot of contextual clues in your post. That makes for better writing.
Also, if you define words in your post, it makes it come off like you assume that we don't know or won't know the particular word that you use. This is somewhat insulting. I don't think you meant it to come off like that, but that's the sort of air that defining a term like that gives.
If you're going to offer a definition, then please use a dictionary definition, not your own. The definitions that we give words often have a deeper meaning, so dictionary definitions are always better than a self made definition. But like I said before, I'd rather you wouldn't define words on here.
The only exception to this is if you are writing in another language -- either a made up alien one, or if you are using a non-English word for something. If you are using an English word, please don't define it unless it is in character, or unless someone asks you what it means.
To use pretense in another way -- using one of the other definitions-- you yourself were making a pretense when you assumed that none of us here would know what it means.)
