"Wait"
The Doctor stopped. "I'm not exactly going anywhere, you know. But did you find that sharp right?"
"Och! Doctor," and the irritation was clear in her voice. "You don't mean this."
"No idea!" he called back, cheerfully. "I can't see a thing!"
She made an inarticulate sound, managing to convey disgust even through the distortion of the gas mask, then began muttering under her breath. He could make out the occasional word - "thirty years", "important", "go ahead", and several words and phrases bluer than the shell of his TARDIS - but the meaning was lost. Although he was pretty sure he could guess what they were.
Then, with a lot of wiggling and a bit of work, Sarah Jane managed to push herself into the side shaft. The Doctor crawled forward, felt around the yielding edges of the sphincter-like opening, and wrinkled his nose in disgust.
And then, with a great deal of grunting, he began to push himself through. As he was neither small nor lithe, it was not a pleasant experience. The only thing that saved him from the embarrassment of being stuck fast was the time he'd spent practicing contortionism and escape tricks with Harry Houdini.
Still, by the time he was through, he was lying on his back with his arms stretched out in front of him.
"Right," he said, trying to project confidence. "If I remember that schematic you were looking at, we shouldn't have to go more than five or ten meters. Then we'll find an access shaft that leads to forward fire control."
