[The Tenth Doctor]

Josh smiled at the Doctor.

"Yes, in fact it was....I wasn't sure how you would respond to me saying that my friend was an alien. I know that it doesn't directly have anything to do with Melissa now...but when you enter a relationship with someone, you also enter a relationship with that person's family. I didn't know how you would respond to me knowing and spending time with an alien. I thought you might think me crazy -- but I'm relieved to know that is not the case."

He then looked back at the Doctor, "I think it's time for us to head back with everyone else. I'd like to talk to my wife about all this.....if you don't mind...unless you wanted to talk to her yourself."

Josh opened the door.

Melissa continued to sit there, looking at her siblings suspiciously. She wondered what her dad and the Doctor might be talking about.

Samantha nodded. "I feel like our parents are hiding something....I'm not sure what.....I don't want to interrupt anyone. Maybe we can listen to the basement door so that we know when dad and John come back."

The Doctor believed but he had feeling that Josh didn't tell everything.

"You can tell her, you've known her longer than I have so you'll probably know how to put it." He said smiling. He followed Josh back to the rest. At time Michelle returned to the room.

The Doctor saw Melissa staring into space and thinking, he went to sit next to her. She looked so calm yet in such deep thought. He startled her when he went to sit next to her.

"Hey, you ok?" He asked looking at her and not letting her drop her gaze. He smiled at her to make her feel confident in telling him if something was wrong. Although he nodded he wasn't entirely convinced. He decided not to interfere, it might make it worse.

Mark and Samantha were about to set off to them but they heard them coming and stayed. They did, however, when they sat down move closer to listen in. Mark smiled at his sister, he didn't realise that he would be eavesdropping on his birthday but he liked it.

When Josh got back into the living room, he had a look of relief on his face.

He turned to Michelle as she entered. "Are you free to talk privately right now?" he whispered to her.

When the Doctor came back into the room, her entire face lit up, and she couldn't help smiling.

She felt him sit down next to her, which she really liked. It was good to be near him again.

Smiling at him, she answered the Doctor. "I'm fine...I was just thinking."

She remembered what her mother had said, but she was not sure whether her mom had said the truth. He really did care about her as a person -- that much she knew. She felt so comfortable with him. He had not let her drop her gaze....and how could she when he was addressing her?

Samantha smiled at Mark. "Well, it looks like we're in hearing distance of them," she whispered.

"Yeah, sure." Michelle answered.

She wondered what Josh was going to say. She presumed that it was something to do with John Smith.

"Thinking about what?" The Doctor asked gently.

She looked to him like she'd been thinking about something important and he wanted to know.

"Yeah." Mark whispered, listening in.

It didn't seem that interesting at the moment but he knew that something would happen.

Josh looked to Michelle and led her outside. He didn't want to make too big of a deal about it.

Once they were alone, he asked his wife, "What do you think about John Smith?"

Melissa replied, "Some things that my mother said to me..."

She felt embarrassed telling him what it was.

Samantha looked at her brother again. "Yeah....something is going on that is important. Maybe we can hear what John and Melissa are saying...."

She was quite confused by this question.

"Uh well he seems very friendly and nice. A lovely gentleman. Why?" She didn't know what Josh was getting at but she tried to follow.

He smirked.

"What she say?" He asked waggling his eyebrows in an amusing way.

"I mean if you don't mind telling me." He added with a 'you can tell me anything' look.

Josh took a deep breath before answering her.

"Well, he is interested in her.....and he is a Time Lord."

He looked to her for a reaction.

"I thought he was human, and he promised me that he would do anything to get her heart, and that he would protect her. Remember when he asked about Jed earlier? I told him I would show him a picture......and I did, towards the end of my talk with him."

"He recognized Jed, and he asked me what I knew about him. I decided to tell him that our friend was a Time Lord. That' when John told me that he is one as well -- and his name is the Doctor, not John Smith."

"I didn't tell him about Melissa or the watch. I figured that if he really wants her, he will find out about it eventually. I have no doubt that he'll recognize the watch when he sees it."

Melissa looked at him, feeling even more uncomfortable. "Remember my roommates? She thinks the same way as they do."

She looked to him to see what he would say.

Michelle stared at him.

"So he's a Time Lord who knows Jed but he doesn't know Melissa is one too." She said trying to add it all up in her head.

"Well...that's a surprise." She smiled.

He tried to remember what the roommates had thought.

"But they said that you and I are..." He trailed off.

"Ohhh." He said realising.

"I see. So she spoke to you about it, right? It's nice to know she thinks a lot of me then." He grinned.

"You do take after your mum a lot you know, just as charming and smart as she is." He told her.

He didn't try to let on too much but he wanted to let her know he did think a lot of her.

'Oooh John's complimenting her. That's a good first move in this conversation.' Mark thought to himself.

He raised a thumbs up to Samantha.

Josh nodded.

"That's right," he confirmed. "Like I said, I would rather have him get to know her and prove himself to her.....and in the course of his getting to know her, he should find out about the watch. Jed of course gave it to us when he gave her to us....but because I thought he'd come back, I kept it safe until she graduated from high school. I'm glad that we gave it to her as a graduation present. I know she thinks that we got it from an antique store. She always carries it with her, so eventually she'll either show it to him, explaining that it was a present, or he'll come across it sometime. He might get a glimpse of it."

"What do you think?" he asked his wife.

Melissa could only nod. She was still embarrassed by it. Still not entirely convinced that her mother was right -- that he did have feelings for her, she felt really weird discussing it with him.

"Yeah, she does think a lot of you. She thinks that I should...work for your love." Her face turned a bright shade of red when she said the last bit.

"I'm sorry that everyone is getting the wrong idea....I tried to tell her that you didn't have feelings like that for me. She didn't seem to listen."

She looked at him, trying to read his expression.

She blushed again when she heard his compliment. Melissa knew that he was being sincere.

"Thank you...."

She couldn't help but smile at that.

"He thinks that I'm smart and charming....."

Samantha, too, was smiling. She returned the thumbs up.

Melissa's comment also helped her know what her mother had said to her. She was very interested in finding out more.

"Good idea. If and when he eventually finds out will be his own doing not ours." She agreed to the plan.

She remembered giving the graduation present and how worried she'd felt, what if she opened it and got all her knowledge right there and then? But she didn't.

"Work for me, well I'm sure you'll have no problem doing that." He told her with a joking smile.

"I don't mind, they all want to help you and I think that's nice. I'm sure their only trying to help besides all the attention is fun." He laughed.

"You're very welcome." He saw she was trying to read his expression.

"You know if there's anything you want to tell me, you can." He informed her honestly.

From the corner of his eye he saw Mark and Samantha with their back to them, he wasn't too sure if they were listening to them because they didn't seem to be doing anything. Still he didn't mind too much.

Mark saw on a mirror near to him that John had a view of them. He was looking at them but not directly, he suspected that he thought they were listening so Mark made conversation.

"So what you get me for my birthday?" He asked jokingly but nudged her to let her know John could suspect them. She seemed to get the message.

Josh smiled at Michelle.

"I'm glad that he's a Time Lord, and he seems to be a nice guy. We'll have to see what happens."

He then thought about the watch some more. Even though he had no way of knowing what his wife was thinking, he was also thinking along similar lines.

"I don't think we have to worry about her just opening it up -- the way that Jed explained it to me was that someone else had to make her aware of it. He said that there was something called a perception filter on it so that she wouldn't open it."

Melissa studied the Doctor, trying to decide what to do. She remembered what had happened in college with the male friends that she had liked. She had sworn to herself that she would not tell a guy that she liked him unless the guy brought it up. At the same time, it almost seemed as though the Doctor was inviting her to say it.

She had hoped that the next guy that she would like would be the one who would tell her about his feelings first, but that was just her own idea. It didn't have to be that way. She had really felt like she was honoring the men she had liked by telling them.

She nodded. "Yes, I know that everyone's trying to help." She had to smile at his comment about all the attention that they had been receiving was fun." She laughed along with him.

Melissa looked back at the Doctor, trying to decide whether or not she should tell him that she liked him.

She nodded, "Thank you.....there is something.....but.....I guess I might as well tell you......" she sighed.

Samantha noticed how Mark had reacted and replied, "Well, if I told you, it wouldn't really be as fun for you to open it. I have something for you, but it's upstairs."

"Well I guess is the only real option. Especially since we don't want to interfere." She clarified.

As soon as she said "Thank you.....there is something.....but.....I guess I might as well tell you......" The Doctor's brain suddenly went into overload.

He got worried about what she might say, he didn't want to get his hopes up if she didn't say it. He wondered what he would say, he knew his answer but didn't know how to say it. But his face resembled none of this, he stayed calm and relaxed.

"Hmmm?" He turned to her with a little smile on his face.

"Oh ok, we'll go up there later then." Mark said.

He realised that John had suddenly gone off the interest of them and turned to Melissa again.

This was getting good now, Mark's eyes widened.

'She's gonna say it isn't she.' He thought.

Josh nodded. "There is nothing to worry about now....I was so afraid of giving him the speech about her not really being human."

Melissa looked back at the Doctor, unable to read his reaction. He probably wasn't going to be expecting this. She just hoped that it wouldn't hurt their friendship. They'd just only met, and she didn't want to ruin it.

This was going to be particularly hard because the other guys that she had told she'd known for a while before telling them.

"What do I say?" she wondered to herself.

Melissa took a deep breath before starting.

"Doctor, I know that we've just met, and I hope that this doesn't hurt our friendship. You asked me what it was...so please bear with me. You've been nothing but kind to my friends, my family, and me. I'm not sure when it really started, and I really didn't realize it until my mom asked me....but I've started to develop feelings for you. I like you. I like you a lot. I thought that you should probably know that. I know you've told me about how people always develop feelings for you, and I'm sorry....I just can't help it. I also know that we haven't known each other very long, so it might be kind of weird. I like being around you -- you're smart and funny..not to mention really cute. I guess I just wanted you to know all that. It's up to you what you want to do about it -- I'm putting this into your hands. I understand if you don't feel the same way about me, or if you want to leave because of my feelings for you. I would really like it if we could still be friends at least, though."

She looked away for a second, not knowing how he would respond to all of that. Then she looked back to him to see what he would say. She knew that that wasn't probably the best speech on her feelings for him that she could have given, but she didn't know what else to say.

When Samantha heard all that, her eyes widened as well.

"Why did she call him Doctor and not John?" Samantha asked her brother.

"Hmmm so was I." She admitted.

"Glad that's out of the way then." She sighed with relief.

He stared at her for a while. Then broke into a warm smile.

"Hehe, I'm cute." He said running a hand through his hand and waggling his feet.

"That's very kind of you and thank you." He began, he could see that she'd heard this before and it'd never meant good news to her.

He leaned close. "Ya know what? I feel the same." He whispered.

"You're a pretty amazing person I must say, you have a wonderful family and incredible friends." He grinned. She smiled at him.

"Also you're truly adorable." He winked at her.

"I've felt the same way for a while now, I'm such a failure at trying to express feelings I've never been able to." He admitted.

That had let a heap off his shoulders.

Mark was surprised too, "I don't know." He said confused.

He heard what John had to say and it brought a smile to his face.

John smiled at his wife. "Are you ready to go inside?"

Melissa wasn't prepared for the Doctor's words. She hadn't expected him to return the feelings.

"He feels the same way," she thought to herself."

At hearing those words, she just smiled, and she smiled even more when she heard the next few things he had to say.

"He thinks I'm an amazing person and that I'm adorable.....wow And he's felt the same way for a while now."

She peered back at him in wonder. "I don't think you're a failure at expressing your feelings. Your words were sweet. I don't need a big long speech...just to hear that you feel the same way and that you've felt that way for a while is enough. You've made me very happy."

She too was relieved that her feelings were out in the open, and so were his. She didn't have to guess about anything anymore. Since she had never experienced this sort of thing before, she wasn't sure what would happen next. Were Time Lord relationships different from human ones? And the type of relationship that Melissa wanted was very different than that of most of the rest of society. She didn't want to do certain things until she was married, and she wanted a lasting relationship that would one day lead to marriage. She wasn't after just a fling. Of course she didn't know whether she would marry the Doctor -- they weren't there yet in their relationship. She hoped that it could be a possibility, but she couldn't count on that happening. Besides, he was still a different species. Maybe he wouldn't want to marry a human.

Samantha heard it too and just smiled.
