The Doctor was suddenly quite scared.

"O-ok." He said following Josh.

Michelle knew Josh would tell John about the watch. But she somehow knew he'd understand. It was a motherly feeling of knowing something when it is yet to happen...or not.

'I hope it goes well.' She thought hoping dearly.

"Uh-oh. Sounds like a serious dad conversation." Mark whisperred to Samantha.

"But he said he would show him something. What could it be?" He wondered.

Josh led the Doctor to the basement. This basement happened to be a finished one -- so there was carpeting, lights, couches, a TV, a computer, a kitchen, a work room, and Josh's study. There was also a pool table and some other things in the basement.

He led "John" into his private study, closing the door behind him. He didn't want to take the chance of anyone interrupting the conversation.

Turning to John, he said, "Just exactly what is the nature the relationship that you have with Melissa?"

Melissa looked around at her mother and siblings, slightly nervously. She had no idea what her father was saying to the Doctor.

"What if my dad finds out that the Doctor's an alien?" she wondered.

He stared at the many things there were in the basement.

"Nothing more than friends. I know it looked weird that we were holding hands but it didn't mean that we were dating or anything." He smiled trying to stay as honest as possible. He wanted it to be a lie though.

He sound trustworthy and he was telling the truth but there was something in his eyes that seemed to say, 'I wish we were though'.

Michelle looked at Melissa. She thought if there was anything going on and John wouldn't say, because Josh wasn't actually that persistent, she might get it out of Melissa.

"So do you and John share a close relationship?" She asked picking her words carefully and spoke quietly so that the children couldn't hear. She didn't want to sound as if she was pushing at the situation too hard though.

Josh heard his words, and took in the meaning, but he also didn't fail to notice the look in John's eyes.

"And how do you feel about her?" he asked. "Would you like there to be something more between the two of you? Do you intend on pursuing a romantic relationship with her sometime in the future?"

"Mother, I told you the truth when you and dad came home. He and I became friends....good friends very quickly."

She slightly blushed at the question. Not knowing whether or not she should say that she had an interest in him, she couldn't help but think about him and smile. Her face lit up as she was thinking about John.

He thought, he didn't want to sound needy because he wasn't but he didn't want to sound uninterested. He looked at the floor and began to speak.

"Well, I-I don't really know. I've experienced complicated relationships. I've had my heartbroken and then broken peoples hearts and now I want to be careful...it's only turned more complicated." He told Josh truthfully. It was as if it all poured out.

"Do you think she likes me in that way?" He asked looking up.

She realised talking about John made her smile. It made her feel happy.

"Do you want more between you two? What are your emotions towards him?" Michelle whispered taking her out of the room.

"Typical, we come in and they all go out." Mark sighed and rolled his eyes

Josh gave the man an understanding, yet kind smile.

"I have to admit that I haven't had much opportunity to give advice regarding romance and relationships to other people, especially anyone who has been interested in my daughter. John, you seem to be a nice guy, and I wouldn't want you to get hurt. It's good that you acknowledge that the situation is complicated -- it is more complicated than you realize right now -- but there is no need to get into that now."

He looked away from the Doctor, and deep in thought for a moment.

"If you choose to pursue her, I cannot promise that your heart won't get broken. In fact, it will almost definitely. However, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't pursue her. That decision is going to have to be yours. There is something that I'm going to have to tell you eventually, but I won't burden you with it now. You should proceed with extreme caution in your friendship with her, taking into account that you do have feelings for her. I know you have feelings for her, otherwise you would not be having this conversation with me now. You wouldn't have asked if I thought that she liked you in that way. That is all that I will say for now."

After pausing again, he continued. "You seem to be the type of guy who takes relationships and a woman's hearts seriously. There are so few guys like that in the world today, so I admire you for that, John. If you do choose to pursue a relationship with her, then I ask that you promise to do your best to guard both your heart and hers. Only pursue her if you intend on possibly marrying her. Also, it I think that the best sort of romantic relationship comes from a deep friendship with the other person -- I would want my daughter to be in an actual relationship with someone....not just a random fling. She feels this way as well. I know her well enough to tell you this. If you want her, then you need to try to win her heart. I can help you with that, if you would like. However, I have to know that you are serious about this, and that it would be something that you want. Otherwise, both of you are going to get hurt. You should take some time to get to really know her as a person."

"In answer to your final question of whether or not she likes you in that way -- I know Mel well enough to say that I think there is a high chance that she does like you. I saw the way that she looked at you -- the way she acted around you....but the only way to know for sure is to hear it from her. If you feel the same way about her, then you need to decide whether or not you want to tell her. If you intend on starting a relationship with her, then you're going to have to tell her at one point."

He paused again.

"If this is what you want, then at some point I'm going to have to tell you some things -- things that might make you want to never talk to her again. That's why I need to know that you are serious about this before I tell you the rest."

After yet another small silence, Josh continued. "Now, tell me young man, you say that you have experienced complicated relationships. I think that that is something that all men have experienced, and it does hurt when that happens. If you want to talk about any of this to me, feel free. You say that it's only turned more complicated. In what way? What did you mean by that?"

Melissa glanced back at her mother. She was grateful that they were talking in private. She wasn't exactly sure where her father had taken the Doctor, but she didn't think there was any danger of being overheard by anyone. She wanted to tell her mother what she was feeling.

"To be honest, yes....yes I would like there to be more between me and the D.....between me and John." She paused, and then looked right at her mother. "I like him....I like him a lot. I only just met him, but.....I like him. He's one of the nicest guys that I've ever met. I enjoy being around him....he's smart, he's good looking, and he's just a fun person."

Samantha nodded. "Yeah, but maybe we can ask them about it later. Something is definitely going on."

To The Doctor he'd never had such an emotionally motivated talk. He had to admire a father for that.

He thought. He'd been through so much and if he could take so much of a chance to battle aliens and risk his and friends lives then he could take on this. He had only met her recently yet he didn't seem to care about any specie differences. He also took in that there were things Josh would tell him that may make him look away from it all, but in all truth he didn't care about that either.

The incredible things Josh had said had caught his heart on fire, he realise he had this strong passion that would do some much...in fact anything for Melissa if she asked.

"I'm serious about this. I realise that I'd do anything to get her, I can take in whatever you say so that I can win her. I haven't known her long but I don't care. I'll keep her safe." He told Josh him hands clutched determined.

"I know my heart will break but there are somethings worth getting your heart broken for...she's that." He said smiling.

"It's complicated when we spend more time together. Friendship becomes harder to sustain but I know if I break that then there is a risk I could break them too. I could never live with myself if I did that. Them meaning friends that have fallen for me or I've fallen for. I know that it'd be so difficult to live them because I haven't felt so strongly I could risk them as much as I've done with me. I've never been able to do that." He answered remembering all those brilliant friends of his.

He thought for a second. "I suppose if I want this then I'll to risk her as well as me. It's going to be difficult...but I can do it." He was determined.

Michelle smiled at the fact that her daughter was interested in the man. He didn't know what she meant when she said 'the D-' and continued as if nothing had happened. Michelle wasn't concerned with that right now.

"Do you want a serious relationship with him?" She asked.

"I'm you're serious about him and think he'll feel the same, why should you stop right now?" She asked trying to make Melissa think about what she wanted. There is some much she doesn't even know about herself but this could be an opening to finding out.

Josh nodded. "Let me give you some advice, then. Friendship needs to be the basis of any romantic relationship all stages of that relationship -- from when you first start dating to engagement, to marriage. Of course as two people fall in love, that friendship takes on deeper and deeper levels, but it always needs to be there. You need to respect and truly love one another -- and you need to cultivate intimacy, but not the way that society has popularly defined intimacy. True intimacy has to do with really knowing someone at their core level -- knowing what makes them happy, sad, brings them joy, their favorite things, what gives them passion in life, what motivates them, etc. Whenever you get into a relationship with someone, it is always a process. A romantic relationship is no different from that."

If John was truly serious, which he seemed to be, he knew that eventually he would have to be told about the watch and everything.

"But maybe we could hold off on telling him. After all, she is biologically human until she opens that watch. There is no need to tell him yet. I at least need to talk to Michelle about this before I tell him.....she needs to know what's going on. However, it probably wouldn't hurt to show him Jed's picture. That way he'd be seen her real father."

Josh gave John a smile. "Okay then, I will help you win her heart. I will tell you that she is a romantic at heart, so she would be very touched by anything little that you would do to show you that you loved her -- such as leaving out cards, notes, flowers, whatever. And know, too, that she likes to serve and help other people. If it is your sort of thing, I think she would appreciate you doing these things with her. I can tell you what would make her happy......teach you how to love her....but as I said, it's going to be a process. I will give you my contact information so that you can contact me at any time. I'd like to know how things are going between you two...and if there is anything I can do to help."

"I trust you with my daughter, and I know that you will do your best to protect her and keep her safe."

Josh saw just how much this man cared for Melissa, and it touched him. "If all that you say is true, and you consider her to be worth getting your heart broken for, then you truly deserve her."

"No relationship is easy."

He paused before continuing. "You asked to see a picture of Jed? It so happens that I have one in this office."

Josh went to a drawer, pulled out a photo album, held it so that the Doctor couldn't see, and pulled out several pictures.

Josh then handed the pictures to him. "I think you should be able to recognize Michelle and I. The other two people in these pictures are Jed and his wife -- and the other pictures just show Jed and me.

There was no way that he was going to tell John that Jed was an alien....but then John thought about it more.

"However, if I do tell him that my friend is an alien, it will give me a good idea of how he would react if I told him that Melissa was......I could use this as a test. If he runs away, calls me crazy, or reacts badly to the idea that my friend was an alien, then I need to put a stop to his relationship with Melissa. If, however, he responds positively, then perhaps there is hope for the two of them."

Melissa looked back at her mother. "Yes....I'd want a serious relationship with him....but only if he felt the same way about me. Mom, I don't know how he feels....I doubt that he likes me like that. He's just a nice guy. I'd rather not get my hopes up."

The Doctor took note of all this in his brain. He was learning a lot about humans now.

He'd completely forgot about Jed but as Josh told him about it he remembered. The Doctor the few photos and looked at them, they were covering any view of The Doctor's face and expression. He was looking at them for an awfully long time.

'HOW COULD IT BE?! This is the Jed I knew...if they knew him then Josh must have known he was an alien, but why would he need to know him? I will it freak him out if I know him or if I tell him I'm an alien? There's only one way to find out.' The Doctor thought to himself.

"What do you know about this man? Tell me everything...nothing will shock me at all, right now all that is shocking me is the fact you know him. But why?" The Doctor asked, he didn't say it hastally or slowly or angerily. He said it as if he knew everything about the man in the pictures.

This was a surprise even for The Doctor, he'd never had thought from the start of meeting Melissa he would know her father to have a connection with his race.

"Melissa to be honest, I've seen the way he looks at you. The way you smile together, I'd hardly be shocked to find out he feels the same. Since you don't entirely know whether he does though, if you love him enough you have to work for it...although I think your dad has already convinced John that he'll have to work for your heart." Michelle told her, as any mother she wanted her daughter to think about these things seriously. So she walked off to let her think.

She knew Melissa was a very good thinker when it came to issues concerning others but she wanted her to think about her own life. Especially think about the man she may love.

"They're probably both getting the same kind of 'if you love him or her very much then you have to work for it' talk then." Mark grinned back. He'd never had a talk like that, then again his parents didn't find out about his social life.

He wasn't dating someone now but he had been. He hadn't had any serious relationships but they hadn't been meaningless. Mark knew he wasn't ready for anything serious and he knew how important it was to wait for the one you love but he supposed the more you dated the more you learnt, and the smarter you became.

He didn't want to end up doing something he would regret so he didn't really have clingy girlfriends and wasn't clingy himself.

Mark was smart for his age so he knew how to act but he made mistakes, he thought that it was better to make them now than later on in life.

Josh was puzzled by how long it seemed that John was looking at the pictures.

Then he heard John's response.

"What do you know about this man? Tell me everything...nothing will shock me at all, right now all that is shocking me is the fact you know him. But why?"

It sounded as if John really knew him, so it didn't seem it would be a shock to tell him that Jed was an alien. Perhaps he already knew.

Josh took a moment to take in John's question before he spoke again.

"I told you a lot of what I knew about him, but I left some things out before. Jed was an alien called a Time Lord, as in from another planet called Gallifrey. What I told you about meeting him through my work was true -- he happened to be doing some intelligence work for his planet when he came into contact with me. He was doing something undercover for them, and he and I ended up working together. He applied for a temporary position with the CIA."

"In the course of working together, he and I became good friends. It was a while before he told me that he was an alien. After his work here was done, he would sometimes come back and visit. It wasn't difficult for him -- he had this ship that he called a Tardis that could travel anywhere in space and time. He took me a few places. We mostly stayed here on Earth, though, and did what most friends do -- we camped together, went on vacations together, etc. Michelle and I got to know his wife as well."

He looked back at John to see whether or not he received any sort of reaction from him.

"I know this all probably sounds crazy. But you asked me for what all I knew about him."

It seems like you knew him as well.....which is somewhat shocking to me as well. I suppose that he was just as likely to visit England as he was to visit here. How did you meet him? How much do you know about him and his family? Did you know that he had a daughter?"

Melissa's eyes widened at what her mother had just said.

She watched her mother walk off.

"What is going on? My mother actually thinks that the Doctor is interested in me...but she doesn't know that he's an alien. She doesn't know.....she must be wrong.....what do I need to do to work for him?" she wondered to herself.

She then got up and returned to the living room. Could her father really be talking to the Doctor about winning her heart.

"But my dad doesn't know that the Doctor's an alien either....what will my parents do when they find out?"

Samantha looked at her brother as she saw Melissa come back into the room.

"Maybe you're right," she whispered to her brother.

"I thought you might know that. Look if you believe him saying it then you can believe me." The Doctor took a deep breath and thought carefully about how he was going to word this.

"My real name is The Doctor, I'm a Time Lord from Gallifrey. I'm the last of my race and I'm afraid Jed was killed in the Time War. I know the thought of a Time Lord and your daughter who is human being together is a little weird but she seemed to accept me for who I am. I want you to know that I admired Jed, he was good man. He was loyal and brave but also protective. It hurts me to think that I'll never see him again but I'll never see any of them again." He told him.

"I did know he had a daughter but I didn't know for a long time, only near to the Time War. He only mentioned her and said he loved her but I didn't even know her name. After his wife had her we lost contact because of the time he spent away with her and his wife. But sometimes he would come and see me, he never brought his family at all though." The Doctor said thinking back.

"For a good friend like Jed I didn't know a lot about his personal life or his family. I have only met his wife a few times but that's it." He admitted.

When Melissa went back into the room both Mark and Samantha looked at her. She seemed to be in deep thought. Mark thought his mother must have said something because she didn't come back in.

Mark wanted to ask her what she said and what had happened but he didn't want to intrude. He saw that Samantha was about to ask her but Mark stopped her.

"We should ask about these things, she might be in a delicate mood. Don't want to annoy her." He whispered making sure Melissa couldn't hear their conversation. Although he didn't think it would make much difference since she was wrapped up in her own thoughts.

Josh stared at the Doctor, his mouth hanging open for a second.

"You're a....Time Lord?" He looked at the Doctor a while before saying any more. "I'm so sorry that your race was killed. Jed told me about a possible war....said it was something called Daleks or something. It was before the war actually started, but he was scared. I'd never known him to be afraid before...but the man was terrified. I hadn't known for sure that he had died, but I had to assume...when he never came back...."

He paused for a moment.

"Melissa knows that you're a Time Lord? You told her? And she's accepted it......I......that is certainly a surprise that she met a Time Lord......and um...is interested in one. I didn't think it would happen." His face lit up as he thought about it and he continued. "No, no problem at all....I don't mind the fact that you are a Time Lord and are interested in her. This certainly was unexpected....and......I'd be very happy for both of you." For the first time in the entire conversation, he looked relieved, as if a huge burden was off of him.

He paused again.

"And I'm glad to know that you knew Jed and thought very well of him."

He didn't think it was his place to tell the Doctor about Melissa. He again breathed a sigh of relief. He wouldn't have to tell the Doctor that she was really an alien in disguise after all. He wouldn't have to tell him about the watch. He had no doubt that the Doctor would eventually figure it out. He wanted him to.

"Well, yes....Jed did love his family. He would do anything for them, especially for his daughter."

He smiled again at the Doctor. He was pretty sure that the Doctor would know about chameleon arches.

In order to encourage the Doctor, he spoke up, "You survived the Time War. Did you ever consider the possibility that there might have been others to have survived?"

Melissa looked over at her brother and sister.

Samantha took her brother's advice and whispered back, "Maybe we should go somewhere else in the house....you know?"

(I have to go...I'll be gone for a long time today...I won't get back until the evening my time....unless the weather is so bad that I'm sent home early from my internship site. Just reply...and I"ll reply whenever I can get on again.)

"I hope that some day they may come back...but it's not going to happen." He looked upset but then reverted back thinking about Josh's words.

"Was that what you were going to say that might make me change my mind about Melissa?" He asked. He then laughed, "Even if I was human I wouldn't have minded that." He said truthfully.

'He seemed quite relieved when he told me that and I told him about me. Perhaps it was the fact he kept it all bottled up inside.' The Doctor thought to himself.

Josh looked at the Doctor completely confused.

"What? What exactly are you asking, Doctor? You said" was that what you were going to say that might make me change my mind about Melissa? Even if I was human I wouldn't have minded that. What did you mean by that?"

Josh was confused about what the Doctor was referring to.

"Did he figure it out? Or was he referring to something else?" he thought to himself.

He needed to make sure that he understood what the Doctor was thinking before he could respond to him. He didn't want to tell him that she was a Time Lord if he hadn't figured it all out yet.

"So....have any idea how we can figure out what's going on for sure?"

"I meant was telling me Jed was alien the big thing you were going to tell me. The thing you thought that might make me never talk to Melissa again. If it isn't whatever it is you can tell me." The Doctor clarified.

He didn't for one minute think it was but he wanted to find out.

"Well asking might be an option but who do we ask? Asking Melissa might be risky and mum will just make up some excuse on why she can't or something. Dad is with John and we can't exactly interupt them. I'm not really sure what to do but wait really. I suppose you don't know either." Mark said trying to think.

It was difficult right now to ask anyone and he couldn't listen in because they might get caught and there might be nothing left to listen in on. All he could think of was waiting for the right time to ask or waiting and letting it all unfold.
