Good question and I really don't know. I think its a little popular thing. You can exalt someone power by making them get exalted or you can smite them by clicking smite as saying I hate you. Maybe not that strong. But that's how I see it.

I once had a character that had acquired -4 Karma. Apparently she had done something that made her look... well, not nice. Seems I've gotten to the point that her Karma is 0, so someone helped her get back up in ratings. ;D

Never in all my years months on Proboards have I heard of an account with anything less than zero karma. I'd take it as a compliment.
Of course, it depends whether your character was so good it evoked extreme emotion in the other members or if she was so bad that everyone immediately disliked her. I'm going to go for the first one. c;

exalted Gylfie because I had no clue she exalted me and because she made me thing about the what-ifs of history.
I smited someone once.
And then I felt guilty so an hour later I exalted them. XD
But it wasn't someone on this site.

I find it funny that you felt bad after smiting someone. I'd probably feel awful too and apologize, even if they had no idea it happened.
